Carroll Joseph Delery, III, known to many as “C.J.” and to others as “Cary”, at the age of 78, entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 20, 2022, at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born on November 28, 1943 to Marie Elise Caboche Delery and Carroll Joseph Delery, Jr.
Cary was born and raised in Gentilly, where he attended St. Rose de Lima, St. Aloysius, and graduated High School from Cor Jesu. He studied his love for history at Louisiana State University of New Orleans and graduated in 1966. He was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic Church and resident of Metairie, Louisiana for 50 years.
Known as “C.J.” to his Sears family, he retired from the Clearview store after 35 years, where he was a dedicated associate serving in various sales and management positions. He received much recognition and many awards, often mentoring many who were growing their retail sales career.
Through Cary’s lifelong obsession with Americana collectibles, Civil War memorabilia, and a vast collection of rare coins, he opened the Historical Shop in 1978 and ran his business until the day he died. His reputation amongst his colleagues in the dealer community was that of a man of great integrity, knowledge, and was a valuable resource for many who sought his advice or to those who wanted to build their own collections.
Cary was a long time member of The Society of the Founders of the City of New Orleans, a former member of the Krewe of Centurions, an avid L.S.U. Tigers fan, and a New Orleans Saints season ticket holder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie Elise Caboche Delery and Carroll Joseph Delery, Jr.; his sister, Roxanne Marie Delery Munsch and her husband, Wayne Joseph Munsch, Sr.; his wife of 37 years, Mary Yvonne de’Hemecourt Delery, the mother of his children; and his youngest son, Christopher Patrick Delery, who recently passed in January of this year.
Cary is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Margaret Montalbano Delery; his brother, Barry Louis Delery (Terry); his daughter, Dawn Marie Delery; his son, Craig Louis Delery (Xin Hui); step-daughter, Erin Russell (Kirk), step-son, Brian Connolly (Erika); and daughter-in-law, Lisa Goodwin Delery.
He was a devoted and loving grandfather to his grandchildren, Adam Meyer, Brandon Meyer, Jordan Meyer, Bretagne Delery, Gavyn Delery, Roman Delery, Nicholas Russell, Elizabeth Collins, Elaine Russell, Lauren Connolly, and Gabe Connolly. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Aevrie Meyer, Brayden Meyer, and Olivia Collins; nieces, Lisa and Jacqueline; and nephews, Jay, Steven, and Paul.
C.J. Delery was an honest, loyal, and brilliant man, respected by all who knew him. He worked tirelessly to take care of his family and the people he loved. Cary’s life was enriched by not just his family but many friends and colleagues.
The family would like to thank the medical staff and surgical team at Tulane Medical Center for the incredible care he received and all the support they have shown our family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 12:00PM. The visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 9:30AM. The interment will follow the Mass in Metairie Cemetery. After the interment, a Celebration of Life will be celebrated at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wattigny.
