Charles Frederick Hardie V (“Fred”), age 71, beloved husband, father, Grumps, brother, and brother-in-law passed away on October 19th, 2025. Fred was born in New Orleans, LA on October 5th, 1954. He is survived by his wife, Anne Ferran Hardie; sons, Charles (Jamie), Jason (Kerri), and Calvin (Amanda) Hardie as well as nine grandchildren, Jude, Ben, Adeline, William, Ellie, Lily, Molly, Amelia and Julia Hardie. He is also survived by his siblings, Keith Hardie (Paulette), Peggy Hanson (Eric), Byrne Hardie, Sarah Keifer (David), Logan Hardie (Stephanie), Katie Levy and Robert Hardie (Kellie), and sister-in-law, Sheila Ferran, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Keith Hardie and Margaret Logan Hardie, in-laws, Calvin John Ferran and Frances Burst Ferran, his brother, Mark Logan Hardie, sister, Ethel Aubert Hardie, brothers-in-law, Rene John Ferran and Marc Cohen Levy, and nephew, Nicholas Rene Ferran.
Fred founded Ferran-Hardie Homes in 1994, building or renovating countless homes in the Greater New Orleans Area with Anne at his side and later his son, Jason. He served as president of the HBA of greater New Orleans in 1992 and became a life director of the National Association of Homebuilders in 1998. He was awarded Builder of the Year in 1989 and served as chairman of the Home and Garden Show. He also served as a reserve police officer for the New Orleans Police Department with his brother, Mark, in the late 1970s.
Fred loved spending weekends with his wife, sons, and in-laws at the Ferran fishing camp, “Thunderbend,” in Grand Isle. He would then share his catch with many friends and family at the annual Critter Dinner, where he and his family cooked their world famous fried fish.
Fred was an avid sportsman and audiophile. He enjoyed taking his family and friends to Saints games, where he and his brother Mark would personally rile up the crowd to “stand up and get loud” with an ear piercing whistle that was uniquely his. He loved playing basketball at St Angela Merici and his skills at barroom games, including pool, darts, and foosball were legendary throughout the city. However, he most enjoyed attending his sons’ games, cheering on his beloved Saints and Tigers, and going on the annual dove hunt or occasional fishing trip. His countless stereo and speaker purchases would rival the loudest movie theater or stadium. He always enjoyed listening to his music as he worked on odd jobs at the house on weekends, and cherished the dance parties that would inevitably spring up at every Hardie gathering when he or Mark would serve as impromptu DJs.
Fred also loved spending time in Pass Christian, Mississippi. From his earlier days with his parents, siblings, and extended family, to the present day, where he was able to gather with friends and family at the house that he and Anne always dreamed of building. Fred was always at peace on the Coast.
Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2017, Fred never lost his sense of humor or his love of his family and friends. He fought the progression of Parkinson’s as best he could by joining the Rock Steady boxing group for men and women diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He thoroughly enjoyed his time here with the trainers and new-found friends. Ultimately, Fred lost his battle with Parkinson’s, but will forever be remembered for his selfless dedication and love for his family and friends.
A visitation for Fred will be held Thursday, October 30, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home & Cemeteries, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, followed by a memorial mass at 1:00 PM. Inurnment will take place in Metairie Cemetery.
