Dorothy M. Nunez DuBos, a homemaker and devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and great grandmother, died peacefully on August 22 at St. Anthony Community Care Center after a long life well lived. She was 97.
A native and lifelong resident of New Orleans, Mrs. DuBos was the proud mother of nine children and two step-children, all of whom she cherished. Known as “Mamere” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was a constant source of encouragement to all who knew her.
Mrs. DuBos graduated at the top of her class from John McDonogh High School and received a full scholarship to Newcomb College. As much as she looked forward to going to college, she instead went to work to help support her family. She did this with characteristic zeal, serving as an office assistant for the U.S. Navy during World War II.
All her life, Mrs. DuBos stressed the importance of education. Her chief ambition was to see all her children attend college, which she realized several times over thanks to her many loving words of support and praise.
Mrs. DuBos founded Brownie and Girl Scout troops to engage her six daughters and their friends in community service, and she always attended her three sons’ ball games, musical performances and film premiers. Throughout her life she loved the arts, and she inspired that same love in her children.
A devout Catholic, she often made novenas for ailing friends and relatives, and every afternoon in Lent she and her husband, Clarence DuBos Jr., marshaled their nine children to attend 5 o’clock Mass as a family. Her lifetime of sacrifice and spiritual devotion was an example to all. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Pius X parishes in New Orleans and St. Francis Xavier Parish in Metairie.
Mrs. DuBos was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Clarence James DuBos Jr.; her parents, Joseph Sambola Nunez Sr. and Cecilia C. White Nunez of New Orleans; her daughter, Lisa M. DuBos DeVille of New Orleans; her stepson Daniel D. DuBos of Monroe, La.; her grandson Kyle Joseph Rogers of Houma, La.; her siblings Joseph Sambola Nunez Jr, J.J. Nunez, Leo Ojeda Nunez, Imelda Nunez Bulot, Mary Theresa Nunez Colgan, Anthony LeBaron Nunez, Sidney Ambrose “Rip” Nunez, John James “Jack” Nunez, Rita Nunez Sannes, and Audrey Nunez McElwee.
She is survived by her children, Cynthia M. DuBos Rogers (Raymond) of Kenner; Susan L. DuBos Danner (the late Alvin) of Marksville, La.; Laurie Ann DuBos of New York, NY; Clarence J. “Clancy” DuBos III (Margo) of New Orleans; Michele F. DuBos of Metairie; Roy J. DuBos of Los Angeles, Ca.; David J. DuBos of Metairie; and Renee M. DuBos Conley (Mark) of Virigina; her step-daughter Carol S. Wroten of Monroe, La.; 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and scores of beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. DuBos’ family extends their heartfelt thanks to her friend and caregiver, Theresa Griffin, whose boundless patience and love were a blessing to Mrs. DuBos and to all who loved her. Her family also thanks the staff and medical providers at St. Anthony Community Care Center in Metairie and Notre Dame Hospice for their kindness, attention and care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Very Rev. Patrick Williams at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mrs. DuBos’ memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee (www.stjude.org).
