

Edith Mae Vessel Toney born August 15, 1935 in St. Francisville, LA passed away on July 28, 2024 at the age of 88. After graduating high school she attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. She worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant until she retired. Edith was an original member of the White Swans, a founder and president of The Fun Lovers Traveling Club. She loved cooking for loved ones and friends and loved to travel, especially cruises. She also loved the New Orleans Saints and was a die-hard fan, since the first game at Tulane Stadium. Edith is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, Alsice Toney, Sr.; parents, James and Mary R. Vessel; aunt, Louella R. Evans; step-sons, Shedrick Toney and Alsice Toney, Jr.; sisters, Lizzie Mae Emery and Corinne Brown; Eugene, Izile, Elson, and Robert Vessel; grandchild, Robert Charles Howard; daughter-in-law, Thella Wells. She is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Toney Henry (Jarman), Gwendolyn Toney Edmonson; sons, Michael Toney Wells, Gregory Toney; sisters, Lillie Mae Allen, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and family and friends. The family would like to give special thanks to the caring staff of the Ochsner Hospice and Palliative Care Unit. Services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd New Orleans, LA 70124. Visitation will being at 9:00AM followed by a service at 10:00AM with Rev. Dr. Ollis T. Brown, Sr., officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum.
