

Elaine Schneider Gwin died peacefully at her home on Saturday January 7th. She was born in New Orleans on July 9, 1924 and was 92 years old at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Erna Schnoor Schneider and George Edmond Schneider. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-four years, Oscar M. Gwin, Jr. and her brother Dr. George T. Schneider. She is survived by her two children Georgia G. Sewell (Jerry) and Oscar M. Gwin, III (Yvonne) six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister in law, Cheri Banos Schneider. Elaine graduated from Sophie Wright high school and attended Newcomb College where she met her first husband Harry V. Sims, Jr. Lt. Sims was killed in action on Dec. 20, 1944 piloting a B-24 Liberator at the Romanian oil fields. Lt. Sims was 21 years old at the time of his death and wore the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Presidential Unit Citation. After the war Elaine met and married Oscar M. Gwin, Jr. who had served in the Navy during the war in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Gwin died December 14, 2000. Elaine was a member of the Orleans Club, the New Orleans Country Club, Southern Yacht Club, Le Petit Salon, and the PEO. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and played golf at the New Orleans Country Club until her health declined. She was a member of Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church and attended St. Charles Ave. Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held on Thursday January 12th at 11:30AM at Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church, 3900 St. Charles Ave. with visitation beginning at 10:30. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private.
