I first met Ellis in 1973. I was just recently back from Vietnam, discharged from the Marine Corps and registered for the Summer semester at LSU. I was living in the Pentagon “Barracks” (?...could have been called something else) student housing, where Ellis was living. He was one of the first friends I made at LSU. We began a friendship which lasted for many years until I moved to California in 1984. Before that we did various things and had some fun together. In my senior year at LSU (fall of 1976) I needed to take two art classes to graduate and started a Metalsmithing class under Chris Hentz.  My first entry into the Student Art Exhibit that year and my work with Chris became of interest to Ellis and he soon took a class with Chris. We spent many hours together working on our various projects late into the night when all the other students were long gone. I graduated in May of 1977 B.S. Degree in Environmental Science and Industrial Technology, but continued on for two years to get a second degree in Sculpture and Metalsmithing. When my G.I Bill was up, I left school for work. "Trip" continued on in Metal. I lost contact with Ellis when I moved to California in the early 1980s then to France. Sad to hear of his passing. Actually sent him an email telling him I'd be in N.O. and hoped to see him, but learned of this "event". I will always remember our times together and miss him!

Well..... I'm late learning of my brother Trip's passing.  He's the godfather of my oldest daughter.  He's the silversmith of the 20th century.  That alligator rhyton needs to be in the Smithsonian.   I can't say much more.  Gotta cry now.

Ellis was my classmate in elementary school at St Catherine of Siena. We sat next to each other. He was quiet and always listened carefully. I was a talker, writer, and translator;  as children we shared a passion for history, truth, the arts and older modeled cars. We were to continue this connection into college while at LSU. I often asked Ellis about my treasures, my collections, and for his talented expertise, ideas, and advice. He seemed to admire my exuberant enthusiasm regarding certain pieces, the timing of such, and the artist behind the creation. Ellis grew to become a man for all seasons who protected and preserved simple beauty and majestic creation. I am so very saddened to learn of his early passing. May Ellis rest in peace; he will be missed by his childhood friends and classmates.

I think Ellis was the first Metalsmith whose work I purchased. I met him in the early '80s when he was a student at LSU. For me he was an example of the best of the south. I am so sorry for his family's loss

An incredible mind, large heart, decent man with such integrity. True to his beliefs never wavering. Loyal and present always. Never ever to be forgotten . What an amazing gift  Ellis  was.

Ellis taught me so much and was such an inspiration to me.  I am proud to have been his first apprentice.  I will miss him.

Ellis and I met in 1987 when we were introduced by fellow metalsmith, Tom Lorio, in Baton Rouge. He was a steadfast, supportive and valued friend. I adored him for his "clarity of vision." I will miss him. - Deborah F. Pope, New Orleans, Louisiana

I was shocked and very saddened to hear of Ellis' death.  Through the years he did a variety of repairs for me and they were always done beautifully.  An extremely talented and knowledgeable artist, as well as an interesting, courtly and kind man, he will be  terribly missed. My deepest sympathy to Kate and his family.

I was in grad school at LSU with Ellis when we built a glass blowing studio and became the charter students. Ellis always had his own view of technique even w glass and I still have one of his glass "globlets". A wonderful soul of southern grace and style. He lives on in my cherished and fun memories of him. Carry on Brother!  Harry stuart

We first met Ellis when he began his career as a silversmith and metalsmith. From that first  encounter until our last he was always the same; kind and generous with a wonderful sense of humor.  He loved to share his creative ideas and talents.  He will be  greatly missed.

Ellis was always so generous with his time and expertise. Any bronze, coin silver or weapon that confounded me he had it. I am grateful to have known him.

   Ellis was incredibly talented and fun to be around. We worked on some restoration jobs together over the years and had many exciting conversations about the art world and New Orleans folks. He will be missed yet remembered many times over in my heart!

My condolences to the Joubert family.  I will always remember Ellis as a gentle man, who was knowledgeable on many subjects.  I was so touched to see Ellis at my own mother's funeral.  I know he will be missed by many.

I spent three eventful years in LSU Art curriculum with Ellis, followed by years of all-too-short visits.  A master silversmith, a collector and historian, a Katrina survivor, a devout New Orleanian, a scholar and a southern gentleman, and a true and dear friend. Oh, the stories Ellis could tell; and some he kept to himself. What I would give for one more visit, one more story. Rest in peace my friend. My condolences to his family and fellow friends.

I met and traveled with Ellis on a tour of mainland China.  He knowledge of the language and culture of the country made the experience so much richer.   He was a fine person with a wonderful sense of life.  He was younger than me so I am so sad to hear that he has gone so soon.  When I think of New Orleans I often think of Ellis.  My deepest sympathies to all of you at this time.

Nicette. I am deeply saddened by your loss and that of your family.  To me, Trippy was always a special part of the Joubert family. He was only 7 yrs. old when I met him...and you ...when the family came to visit Aunt Say who was directing the Girl Scout camp in Texas.  And  a pleasure it was to watch him grow into such a kind and talented man.  Please convey my sympathy to the rest of the Joubert family and do stay in touch.

I will always remember Ellis.  He was always kind.  He was always a gentleman.  He always shared his amazing knowledge and passion about a myriad of subjects. He was always willing to help when a piece of history needed deciphering, repair, restoration or recreation.    
And he taught his dog to bring him a cup of coffee.  Really. 
Rarely if ever do any of us have the privilege of knowing someone like Ellis.  
I will always remember Ellis.

What an unexpected loss to learn of Ellis' passing. My sympathies to his friends and family alike. I am honored to have considered myself among the former.

Ellis was my southern Brother. He had a gentle soul and welcoming heart every time we got together. A beautiful life long friend from our times at LSU. I will miss him dearly!

these words rarely have the gravity of intention, but I must express that I am extremely saddened that ellis is not with us anymore, I was priviledged and happy to share a lot of funny and intense conversations and lunches, parties, meetings with him, my deepest condolences to his partner and family.  geez, I will miss him so.

My sympathies to the family and friends of Ellis.  He accomplished work for me several times and what beautiful work it was.  He has left us much too soon.  God Bless him.  We are thankful for the time we had with him.
