Floyd Pace Berlin passed away peacefully and entered eternal rest prepared by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 94 on Saturday, March 12, 2022, in his home. He was born in Marksville, LA and lived in the New Orleans Metro area for 73 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lucille Bunn Berlin; his parents Lee Louis and Beatrice Pace Berlin (Granny & Pa); his sisters, Alla Mae Berlin Fluitt, Luby Berlin Quirk Bordelon, Florence “Kakie” Berlin Guillot Juneau, and Sarah Louise “WeWe” Berlin Saucier; and his brothers, Martin Berlin and Leroy Berlin.
Floyd is survived by his sister, Leatrice “Liffy” Berlin Jones; his loving daughters, Karen Berlin Radosta (Jerry) and Joan Berlin Gonnella (John); his four grandchildren, Jeffrey Radosta (Stacie), Brian Gonnella, Amy Gonnella Pytel (Brett) and Mark Gonnella (Olivia); and his great-grandchildren, Luca Radosta and Noah Pytel.
Floyd attended Marksville High School, Southwestern Louisiana Institute College of Engineering (now ULL) and Delgado Trade School in New Orleans.
While World War II was still going on and at the age of 17, Floyd enlisted in the US Navy serving on the USS Tantalus in China and the Asiatic Pacific. He was honorably discharged in August 1946. Floyd then joined the US Naval Reserves and served honorably until August 1951.
Upon returning to civilian life, he married Lucille and pursued a career in mechanical and electrical engineering. He worked for Western Electric and then Cary B. Gamble & Associates, a Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Consulting Firm. He traveled often and designed entire HVAC systems for many large projects including Michoud, NOPSI (Entergy), Loyola University, The United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, and the Chicago Art Institute. He retired 45 years later from Cary B. Gamble & Associates as President of the company.
Floyd was a member of the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and served as its president from 1983-84. He was awarded the Cary B. Gamble Award in 1985. He was a member of the Methodist Men’s Club and developed many wonderful relationships.
Floyd loved serving the Lord; his faith was a very important part of his life. He was instrumental in the construction of the Education Building at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and served as an usher and occasional adult Sunday School teacher from 1962 to 2006. In 2006 he joined Munholland United Methodist Church, where he also served as an usher and led an adult Sunday School class. He made many new friends there but still maintained his ties with the wonderful friends he had made at St. Luke’s.
Floyd did not have the usual hobbies like golf, fishing, etc. His hobby was his family. He was a “Jack of All Trades” and a Master of Them All. His daughters called on Floyd over the years for help with home renovations, air conditioning, heating, electrical etc.; you name it, he could fix it! He loved to travel and often said “why go to Europe when there is so much to see in this great country!” There was a two-week vacation somewhere in the “good ole USA” every summer and a multitude of Sunday after church daytrips! He had the best grilling BBQ sauce ever.
Floyd was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he had the tightest hugs ever! We will miss him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at Munholland United Methodist Church, 1201 Metairie Road in Metairie, on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at 1:00 pm. A visitation will be held at the church beginning at 11:00 am. The interment will follow the service at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum, 5454 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, LA 70124.
