Mom was born on November 11, 1927 in New Orleans to Frederick and Elice Johanna Hansen Mayer. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Zion Lutheran Church in New Orleans. She was graduated from Sophie B. Wright High School in 1945. She attended Soule Business College for two years, and then worked at Celotex in Marrero, LA. After the birth of Edgar, Jr., she dedicated her life to her family.
Mom volunteered in our schools as librarian and other activities. Over the years, she helped at church with the youth group (Walther League), Vacation Bible School, Altar Care, Shepherd Care of members, making Christian books for Lutheran Braille Workers, and attending meetings, rallies, and retreats with the women of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She loved to play cards and games with family and friends. Her Sunday dinners blessed multiple generations of the family. Mom and Dad were lifelong patrons of the arts. They loved attending the Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre since its inception, the opera, and the LPO Symphony. They enjoyed traveling to visit family and tour many areas of the country.
Gwen was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandma, and friend. She always had compassion and concern for her family members, her church, and her friends. We will miss her dearly in our lives, yet we know she is with Jesus and we will see her again in heaven!
