

Hannelore Schild Buffa, or as she was more affectionately known to friends and family as Hannie, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2023 at the age of 99. She is preceded in death by her parents Karl Heinrich Schild and Hilda Helene Ludecke, brother Carlheinz G. Schild and her husband Gasper John Buffa. She is survived by her nephew Michael H. Schild, his wife Sheryl and daughters Corinne and Eloise. She is also survived by her husband’s niece, Emily Gegenheimer and family.
Hannie was born on January 30, 1924 in Berlin, Germany. She survived WWII and subsequent invasion by allied troops. Hannie married her husband Gasper, an American GI with the U.S. Army medical corps, in Germany in late 1945. Upon their return to the United States, they settled in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans. She worked as an executive secretary with Royal Dutch Shell oil company at One Shell Square until most of the company’s operations moved to Houston, TX. After that, Hannie worked with the Peoples Program at UNO teaching German to anyone willing to learn a new language. She taught private German lessons well into her 90s. Hannie was very passionate about animal treatment and rescue her whole life and would donate to almost any animal rescue request that came in the mail.
Hannie will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Gasper at a graveside service on Monday, August 28, 2023 at 10:30 AM. Services and Interment will be held at Lake Lawn Park and Mausoleum (North Terrace) 5454 Pontchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans.
