

Harold Joseph Gagnet, Jr. passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2015 at the age of 91. Harold, a native of New Orleans, was born on October 15, 1923. He was the beloved father of five sons - Ben (Charlene), Spencer (Licy), Allain (Betsy), Brian and Alex (Norris); cherished brother of Jean Gagnet Dalton; and loving grandfather to nine grandchildren - Trevor, Ellen Claire, Mary Margaret, Tyler, Mathilde, Chandler, William, Nelson and Christopher. Harold is also survived by his very trusted friend of many years, Katherine deMontluzin. He was preceded in death by his mother Mathilde Benedict Gagnet; his first wife Ellen Briou Gagnet and his second wife Marjorie Doll Gagnet. Harold was affectionately called Sonny by friends and family. As a veteran of World War II, he served honorably in the U.S. Merchant Marine receiving commendations for his service in the Atlantic and Pacific War Zones. For over 30 years of his career, Harold worked as a Marine Chief Engineer retiring from Avondale Shipyards. He achieved the highest certification offered to Marine Engineers and maintained his license into his 80s. He loved to discuss politics and history and enjoyed an occasional libation with friends and family. A devout Roman Catholic, he remained faithful to Holy Name of Jesus Church serving as an usher. He was also a longstanding member of the Round Table Club and the Society of the Founders of the City of New Orleans. He especially loved carnival and was a welcome sight at many balls over the years. Harold enjoyed walking and riding his bike in Audubon Park near his home. He will be greatly missed by all that cherished his company and experienced his larger than life personality. Relatives and friends of the family and all who knew him are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 6367 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, La. 70118 on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. All are welcome to attend a reception at the Round Table Club immediately following the interment.
