

Herman F. Plunkett passed away on August 6, 2023 at the age of 97. He was born on June 14, 1926 in Cheneyville, Louisiana. After proudly serving his country as a member of the United States Army, he went on to complete his Masters Degree in Education. He had a career as a Registrar and Director of Admissions for Southern University at New Orleans. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Alpha Fraternity, Boule, The Studs Club, and Men of Distinction. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, working in his garden, and design and fabricate crafts and art from plexiglas.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Gwendolyn J. Plunkett; parents, Ira Plunkett and Amelia Bowie Plunkett; and longtime companion and friend, Edna Quiret Lewis.
Herman was survived by his daughters, Francine Renee and Terri Lynn; son, Gregory Keith; grandchildren, Crystal, James, Durell, Nicole (Derrick), and Alexis; great grandchild, Jabin C. Stephens; former daughter-in-law, Trefalya Frederick; and a host of cousins and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to Ochsner Health Care, Dr. Susan McNamara (PCP), Palliative Care of Baton Rouge, Karen Marioneaux, MSW, Jennie Dedon, APRN, Our House for Respite, Verly Young Polk, Hamah Young, and The Hospice of Baton Rouge.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service officiated by Pastor Aubrey J. Watson, Jr., in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11AM. Visitation will begin at 9AM. Herman will be laid to rest privately in All Saints Mausoleum following the chapel service.
