Howard Louis Murphy, age 71, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, surrounded by family. A devoted husband, father, and friend, he will be remembered for his sharp mind, quick wit, and deep loyalty to those he loved.
Born on October 4, 1954, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Howard graduated from De La Salle High School and went on to earn both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Loyola University New Orleans. He began his career as a television news reporter before entering the legal profession, where his calm presence and gift for clear communication became hallmarks of his work.
In 1980, Howard joined Deutsch Kerrigan in New Orleans and spent more than four decades as a litigator, defending individuals, businesses, and insurers in casualty, transportation, products liability, maritime, and insurance coverage matters. He was widely respected for his meticulous preparation, integrity, and ability to untangle complex issues, as well as for the guidance and mentoring he offered to younger lawyers.
Outside the office, Howard was happiest with his family. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Peperone Murphy, his daughters, Erin Murphy (Mark Mannheimer) and Kristen Murphy, and his beloved grand dogs, Biggie Murphy Mannheimer and Herbie Murphy. He also leaves behind his two brothers, Steve Murphy (Timmie) and Michael Murphy, sister, Lynne Murphy, sister-in-law, Barbara Murphy, and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends, who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Martin Murphy Sr. and Helen Hudson Murphy, and his brother, Louis Martin Murphy Jr.
A lifelong New Orleans Saints fan and a 35-year season ticket holder, Howard also loved reading—especially history—and “continuing to attempt” to play golf, all pursued with his characteristic humor and persistence.
A service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a funeral Mass to be held at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Cancer Crusaders (P.O. Box 7911, Metairie, LA, 70010-7911) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
