Duke lived a truly wonderful life and fully enjoyed all of his 97 years. He was universally admired for his kindness, generosity, extraordinary spirit, hearty laugh and the twinkle in his eyes. He was a man of strong values and quiet dignity. Duke was interested, interesting, endlessly curious and a lifelong learner. Until his passing, he continued to participate in weekly Zoom calls with his family, take courses on his computer, read the WSJ, and follow the stock market. It was this endless curiosity that contributed to his longevity.
Duke’s greatest love and legacy is his family. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Mariann, and the most amazing father to his three daughters. He was the quintessential “girl dad!” He always encouraged them to dream big and was so proud of all of their accomplishments. He took delight in participating in their school activities, getting to know their friends, and driving carpool in the morning. There was nothing that Duke would not do for his family and friends. His grandchildren brought him special joy and he was thrilled to become a great-grandfather and welcome a new generation to the family.
Although Duke moved to Charleston six years ago, he continued his lifelong love affair with New Orleans. He loved the people, culture, food and music of his adopted hometown. He could often be found enjoying dinner at Galatoires or lunch at Radostas. He attended the French Quarter Festival and Jazz Fest into his 90’s.
Duke, so nicknamed as a child, was born Howard Sherman Prince on June 15, 1927 to Herman Samuel Prince and Gertrude Kopel Prince in Cleveland, Ohio. He spent most of his childhood in New York before moving to Detroit as a young adult, and later to New Orleans after marrying. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 63 years, Mariann Copland Prince. He is survived by his three devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Pepe Finn (Terry), Nancy Guidry (Fred) and Skipper Singer (Ezra), and his grandchildren, Molly, Teddy and Lucy Finn as well as Louis, Brian, Joe, and his newest great-grandson, Jack.
A graveside service will be held in Metairie Cemetery at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124 on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11:00 AM.
