

Howard John Smith, Jr. (Nep) passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016. He was born February 5, 1943. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Karen Gleye Smith, his two children Howard Deane (Marcella) and Emily Gibson (Gregory Aycock), his two grandsons, Howard James Aycock and Ian Howard Smith, his two sisters, Lesley Marshall (Charles) and Vail Tessier, and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, Howard John and Charlotte Carter Smith, predecease him. Howard graduated from St. Martin’s Episcopal High School, received his B.A. from Tulane University and his J.D. from Tulane University School of Law. He practiced law with the firm Doyle, Smith and Doyle and with the Shell Oil Company legal department, where he retired. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a founding president of Jefferson City Neighborhood Association and the Edna Gladney Auxiliary of New Orleans. He was also President of the U.S. Naval Academy Parents Auxiliary of New Orleans. He served on the Pratt Stanton Manor Board and the Board of Visitors at St. Martin’s Episcopal School. He was an active supporter of Tulane University athletics, especially football, basketball and baseball. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:30am at Trinity Episcopal Church with a memorial service to follow at 11:30am on Saturday, July 23, 2016. A private interment ceremony will occur at a later date with just his immediate family. Donations may be made to St. Martin’s Episcopal School or Trinity Episcopal School or charity of your choice.
