Joseph Roy Newsome, Jr.

Joseph Roy Newsome, Jr. (70) passed into the hands our Lord on Tuesday, September 21, 2021. First and foremost, he was a dedicated family man. He was married to Harriet Philibert Newsome for 38 years. His family includes daughter, Laura Newsome Sensi; son-in-law, Andrew Sensi; granddaughters, Charlotte Marie Sensi and Madison James Sensi; and son, Roy Newsome, III.

Roy was predeceased by his parents Joseph Roy Newsome, Sr. and Mildred Allain Newsome. He is survived by his 2 sisters, Karen Newsome Cousins (Doug) and Linda Newsome Ellis (Jim); 8 siblings-in-law; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Roy spent his formative years in Lafayette, Louisiana. He attended Lafayette High School and graduated with a BS from (then named) University of Southwestern Louisiana, USL, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and a lifelong Ragin’ Cajun fan. After graduating college, Roy started his working career in the oilfield for almost a decade. That was followed by entrepreneurship as a franchisee of a national golf chain.

After a nearly 20 year career with Academy Sports, Roy settled into retirement 4 years ago which allowed him even more family time. He was an avid golfer since an early age and during retirement spent as much time as possible on the golf course. He was also a huge sports fan, spending his Saturdays with the LSU Tigers and Sundays with the New Orleans Saints.

Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124 on Monday, September 27, 2021, beginning at 10:00 a.m. A Catholic Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie will follow, concluding with interment at Metairie Cemetery.
