Born on December 17, 1940, in Bayonne, New Jersey, to Ida and Herman Horlick, Lil attended Jersey City State College and graduated with a degree in education. She married her childhood sweetheart, Dr. Warren Summer, and together they began a beautiful journey that took them to Washington, D.C., Brooklyn, Baltimore, and ultimately New Orleans, where they would make their home for the remainder of their 63 years of marriage.
Despite her intense fear of flying, Lil and Warren traveled the world together — from South America to Europe to Asia — collecting art, memories, and stories along the way. On one unforgettable trip, she dropped her passport over the Great Wall of China — and miraculously, it was later found. Lil often said she was lucky in love and in life, and she never took that good fortune for granted.
Lil was truly an extraordinary person — compassionate, empathetic, and generous. Her outgoing personality and marvelous sense of humor drew people to her instantly, and anyone who met her quickly sought her friendship. Her mischievous, genuine humor could brighten any room and remind those around her that, even in difficult times, there is room for laughter.
While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate her 85 beautiful years and the countless ways she inspired others to enjoy theirs. She was always boldly and beautifully herself. Even during her final months, her courage, warmth, and remarkable humor never faded, easing the sadness of those who visited and loved her.
Lil is survived by her devoted husband, Warren; her children Lori Machiorlette (Steve), Renée Melchiode (Gerald), and Ross Summer (Ashley); and her adored grandchildren Morgan Machiorlette (Karley), Brette Amaroli (Kevin), Max Machiorlette (Meghan), Zachary Melchiode (Ashley), Margot Bradley (Christopher), Lauren Melchiode, Jacob Summer, and Ella Summer, all of whom she was immensely proud. She is also survived by her dear brother, Arthur Horlick (Linda), along with several nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Steven Kantrow (the LSU Warren Summer Professor of Medicine), the LSU ALS Neurology Department, Guardian Angel’s Hospice, MeMe and her Care Team, and the 123 Walnut community for their extraordinary compassion and dedication.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be decided.
