Louis “Lou” Branigan passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on February 22, 2023. Lou was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He loved Carnival season and often referred to it as “the greatest free show on earth.” A devout Catholic and life-long parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Lou worked as an Allstate insurance agent. His namesake lives on in his son, grandsons, and great-grandsons—all of whom attended or will attend Brother Martin High School (previously St. Aloysius High School).
Lou was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys Burkart Branigan and Louis J. Branigan Sr.; his sister, Gayle Branigan Pietrocarlo; and his great-grandson, Noah Joseph Branigan.
Lou was a faith-filled, kind, and wise man, often giving the best advice to his many family members. Lou is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, JoAnn Locantro Branigan, known to most as Nana; his four children or his “jewels”: George Branigan (Vicki), Lisa Branigan Graham (Greg), Ann Branigan (Eric Knudsen), and Elizabeth Branigan Evans (Ray). He is also survived by his nine grandchildren or his “mini jewels”: George Branigan Jr. (Ali), Brian Branigan (Jeneé), Kelli Dominique (Meg), Brittany Bodet (Chris), Sarah Beshears (Daniel), Mallory Knudsen, Will Spearman, Matthew Spearman, and Austin Evans. His legacy also lives on in his growing number of great-grandchildren, his “micro-jewels”: Parker, Riley, Lathan, William, Aiden, Henry, Brooks, Margot, Leela, Briar, and one baby on the way. He is also survived by his sisters, Lois Walsh and Carol Branigan.
The family would like to thank Nana and Lou’s caretaker team, Angie Doyle and Dana Davis, who provided the best love and care for not only Nana and Lou, but also the entire Branigan family.
