

Maria Taormina Compagno, age 91, was born on November 4, 1924, passed away on October 11, 2016. In her early years, Maria was a certified teacher and worked as an interpreter for the Office of Censorship during World War II. She was a long time parishioner of St. Dominic Catholic Church where she was a member of the Lay Carmelites and had been a Eucharistic Minister. She and her husband, Peter, were granted the titles of Knight and Lady of the Holy Sepulchre. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter; her parents, Calogero Taormina and Maria Uddo Taormina; her son, Gaetano (survived by Connie); and her dear aunts who raised her, Tomassa Uddo “Mamma” and Francesca Uddo “NiNi.” Maria is survived by her four other children, Maria C. Roth (William), Joseph (Marion), Angela C. Chagnard (Donell), and Elisabeth C. Fisher. She is survived by eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to) Discalced Carmelite Nuns (73530 River Road, Covington, LA 70435-2206); Sisters of the Holy Family (6901 Chef Menteur Hwy., New Orleans, LA 70126) or Ozanam Inn, 843 Camp St. New Orleans, LA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Dominic Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 12:00 NOON. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery.
