

McKinley J. Cantrell, III “Mackie”, died at his home in Harahan, Louisiana, on Monday, December 27, 2021 at the age of 47. Mackie was the beloved son of McKinley J. Cantrell, Jr. and Kathy Coste Cantrell; dear and loving father of Mia Nicole Cantrell; devoted companion of six years, Kerri Matherne Palmer, and her children, Sophie Therese Palmer and the late Brady Michael Palmer; brother of Tracy Ann Cantrell; uncle of Austin Michael Cantrell; and grandson of the late McKinley J. Cantrell, Sr. and Beryl Gorrondona Cantrell and Randal Coste and Molice Theriot Coste. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mackie was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 20, 1974. He graduated from Brother Martin High School in 1992, where he played with the football and wrestling teams. He also attended Southeastern University.
Mackie’s career began as a young boy, helping in the warehouse of his father’s business, McKinley Cantrell Floats, LLC. This led to a successful career as an artist, designing Mardi Gras floats, and ultimately owning and operating his own company, Art Demanded. His company specialized in decorating for various special events, especially Carnival balls.
Mackie was very creative, and possessed limitless talent. He also loved music, and played many instruments, including guitar, bass, piano, and drums. In 2019, he was crowned as King of the Krewe of Kings, and proudly standing at his side was his daughter, Mia, who reigned as Queen. He was also on the board of directors with the St. Patrick parade committee of Jefferson Parish.
Relatives and friends of Mackie are invited to attend the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Friday evening, January 7, 2022, from 5:00PM until 8:00PM. The visitation will continue on Saturday, January 8, 2022, beginning at 11:00AM. At 1:00PM, the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Anthony Rigoli in the Chapel of the funeral home, with the interment following at Lake Lawn Park.
