

Myrtle Costanza passed away in Metairie on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, days before her 90th birthday. Myrtle was born in Clio, Louisiana and was a long-time resident of Metairie. She was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy and St. Mary’s Dominican College. She was a longstanding parishioner of St. Benilde Church where she was a member of the Altar Society and the Bereavement Committee, an RCIA teacher, and Booth Co-Captain at the St. Benilde Fair. She was honored with a St. Louis Medallion in recognition of her outstanding service to the Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Russell S. Costanza, Jr.; her parents, Myrtle Kate Hutchinson Weiderman and George Joseph Weiderman; and her sister, Joyce Weiderman Rogers. Myrtle is survived by her daughter, Amy Costanza-Smith (Lindsey); her sons, Charles Costanza (Sharon), Paul Costanza (Kathy), Rusty Costanza (Ann), Michael Costanza (Carol); and her eight grandchildren. Myrtle is also survived by her younger sister, Margie Weiderman Verriere (Leon) and many nieces and nephews.
Myrtle was affectionately referred to as “Mama Mert” by many family and friends who knew her, especially her children’s friends who she always made feel welcome in her home. She was a devoted and loving wife, sister, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She was a whiz with word games, loved flowers and plants, baked delicious Italian cookies, and shared her love of cooking with all of her children. She loved spending Sundays in the fall cheering on the Saints. Myrtle was devoted to her Catholic faith. Her love lives on in our hearts and in heaven.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass to be held at St. Benilde Catholic Church, 1901 Division Street, Metairie, LA 70001 on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation at church will begin at 9:00 a.m. until Mass. Interment will follow the Mass at All Saints Mausoleum in New Orleans.
