Strengthened by the Catholic Sacraments and the love of family and friends. Raphael (Ray) Foley Sr. passed into eternity at his home on August 3, 2021. He is survived by his wife Frances (Bartling) Foley; his children Mary Lou (Barry) Bouvier, Rafe (Therese) Foley, Patricia (the late Dan) Martel, Catherine (Dennis) Kalob; his grandchildren Elizabeth (Jimmy), Katie (Tony), Vince (Lynne), Greg, Chris, Aislinn, Brigid, Patrick; his great-grandchildren Austen, Sarah Michael, Stephen, Emma, Andrew, Ada. He was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Anna Foley - and his siblings Ignatius Michael John Ambrose Georgiana Hand Mary.
Ray grew up in uptown New Orleans and attended Saint Stephen’s Church on Napoleon Avenue during his early life. He had a long-time association with the Vincentian Fathers through his schooling and his own brother Father Ignatius Foley CM. After marrying Frances and starting a family, he began work with US Postal Service where he remained for 30+ years. The family moved to Terrytown where Ray was active as a lector at Christ the King Parish. Upon retirement. Ray began a long and active ministry to the elderly in the community. He served as senior citizens coordinator for the New Orleans archdiocese for several years. He volunteered with the Little Sisters of the Poor in Algiers for 27 years and was an almost-daily source of support for the Sisters and the residents. During this time, Ray had many enjoyable trips around the country to visit family. Ray had a sharp mind and kept a close watch on the news of the day. He had a great love of professional football - his knowledge of the game quickly became apparent to those who competed against him in a football pool. Ray was well respected by all who crossed his path - and was particularly known for his kindness, self-sacrifice and responsibility.
The Foley family is grateful to all the friends, neighbors, nurses and tradesmen who helped make it possible for Ray to reach his goal of living in his home until the end of his life.
Visitation will be on Saturday, August 7, 2021 beginning at 11:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard in New Orleans, L.A. 70124. Interment to follow in Metairie Cemetery.
