Robert A. Barrios, Sr., 32° K.C.C.H., died October 6, 2016 at his home in New Orleans. He was 66. He is survived by his wife of nearly 35 years, Cindy (Simpson) and their three children Kathleen, Kristin, & Rob Jr. and daughter-in-law Lauren (Montalbano). He is also survived by his mother Mildred Theriot Barrios and siblings: Wayne, Valerie, and Tim. Robert is also survived by his loving in-laws in Fort Myers, FL, many friends, and two granddogs Ivy and Ellie. Robert was a native and life-long resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Martin Behrman Sr. High School and briefly attended SLU and LSU. Following college, he worked for AAA Material Handling, a business started by his late father, Curtis A. Barrios, 33°. Robert later succeeded him as president and retired after more than 30 years in business. Inspired by his father and father-in-law Richard G. Simpson Jr. 33°, Robert joined the Valley of New Orleans, Scottish Rite in 2003 and became very active. He was selected to receive the decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour (Red Cap) in 2007 and served as Venerable Master in 2010. He was active in the following lodges: Andrew Jackson No. 428, Daylight No. 412, Louisiana No. 102, James M. Walley-Sr. No. 300, Germania No. 46, and Lee E. Thomas. He held many offices and most recently served as District Deputy Grand Master for the 17th district of Louisiana. He will be remembered as a beloved softball and baseball coach at Carrollton Boosters and for calling every man from age 8 to 88 “Sir.” Throughout his life, Robert was called upon by many organizations including the Holy Name of Jesus Dad’s Club and Spina Bifida of Greater New Orleans (Camp Friendship) to cook what he was best known for—his fried catfish. He enjoyed fishing for red snapper and speckled trout with friends and family in Venice, Port Sulphur, and the Rigolets. Almost annually, they embarked on deep sea trips to catch tuna and wahoo. For many years he rode in the MS Tour for the Cure and could be regularly seen walking in Audubon Park. Robert and his son were regulars at Sunday church in the Dome and were blessed to be in that number at Super Bowl XLIV. Robert was a Mr. Fix-It and had not met a home improvement or auto repair challenge he couldn’t conquer. He will be missed most by his wife and children who will be forced to learn some repair skills. Visitation will be held at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 9:00 am with a ceremony to follow at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to The Scottish Rite Foundation, S.J., USA 1733 Sixteenth St. NW Washington, DC which supports childhood language and learning disability programs, scholarships, and disaster relief.
