Sara Trentacoste Pizzo, age 89, a true New Orleans character affectionately known as “Miss Sara, The Hat Lady,” loved a party and hopes you will celebrate the end of her life. She looked forward to the day that she would once again lay side-by-side with her loving husband, Charles P. Pizzo, Sr. (1918 – 1991). She passed peacefully in a deep sleep five days after a massive stroke that occurred on Christmas Day. Sara was a fun-loving, free spirit with no time for serious matters; she just wanted to laugh and act crazy. So, let’s have a good time and remember her antics. She will be buried on the official kick-off date of the Mardi Gras season, thus parading out as the unofficial Queen of Twelfth Night. Even in death, she will have the last laugh. She may be late to her own funeral due to holiday-related delays in getting a permit to transfer from Texas, where she resided after losing her home in Arabi, Louisiana, to the federal flood during Hurricane Katrina. Sara, was a stay-at-home Mom who helped her husband in the family business, Pizzo Leather Co., Inc. She was active in St. Robert Bellarmine Church (Arabi, LA), St. Jude Church (Allen, TX), COPOL Club, Krewes of Iris and Shangri-La, St. Bernard Parish Senior Citizens groups, and TOPS (they loved to go eat after the weight loss meetings). She was a regular at Dunkin Donuts and WalMart in Chalmette, and frequented area casinos to cash in on free play and hit the buffet. She had two kids who she dragged to Carnival balls and parades, Charles P. Pizzo, Jr. and Maria T. Pizzo (Mrs. Tim) Gabriel. Her pride and joy were her three precious grandkids, Rachel Marie, Dean Brooks, and Breton Ray Hawkins. Her patriotic brothers all served their country in World War II: her twin brother Salvador, plus Joseph, Anthony, and August. Sara was raised by Maria Demma and Nunzio Trentacoste from Sicily (deceased). She graduated from L E Rabouin Vocational High School, with a degree in sewing. She was notorious for sewing rabbit fur, gold trim, and other flashy accessories onto her clothing, and well known for wearing colorful hats---her personal trademark.
