

Walter leaves behind his loving wife of 47 years, Nancy Lee McDaniel; his beloved daughter, Susan Galkowski; his three sisters, Joan Hayes (Paul), Nancy Bodnar (Ray), and Tricia Brandt (Bill); one brother, Jim Galkowski (Lorraine); his nephew, Brian Bonventre; his niece, Abby Peterson (Garrett); two great-nephews, Lucas Bonventre and Henry Peterson; and one great-niece, Kara Bonventre. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Irene Galkowski.
Walter was born in Hicksville, New York on January 21, 1953. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and while stationed in Hawaii, he met his future wife, Nancy, a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Walter worked for over 30 years with Pan American Life Insurance, retiring in 2009. He was also a co-owner of the River Shack Tavern on River Road in Jefferson. He was a 30 plus year member of the Krewe of Endymion, a member of Knights of Columbus, and a parishioner of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church in River Ridge.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 2:00PM. A visitation will take place at the funeral home beginning at 12:00PM. The interment will be privately held at a later date.
Walter loved animals and had many rescue dogs over the years, and he enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to the Best Friends Animal Society, www.bestfriends.org.
