William “Bill” Joseph May Jr, (78) passed away on October 10, 2023 due to complications from vascular dementia. Bill was born to William J. May Sr. and Doris Doiron May on February 4, 1945 in Franklin Louisiana. While in college at the University of Southwestern Louisiana studying mechanical engineering, Bill met and married Carol Portier of Thibodaux, Louisiana. They started a family and after graduating, moved to Oklahoma and California as Bill pursued a career in the oil business.
The call of Louisiana was strong, and they returned in 1978 to set up residence in Morgan City, LA. He and his wife Carol decided to move to New Orleans in 2000 to be closer to their children and grandchildren, but Hurricane Katrina prompted a swift relocation to Thibodaux in 2005. After the passing of his wife, Carol in 2009, Bill lovingly cared for his father-in-law, Arthur Portier in Thibodaux for 10 years.
Bill then moved back to the New Orleans area to be closer to his children, once again.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William May Sr. and Doris May, and his wife Carol. He is survived by his three children, Donna Accardo (Tommy), Paula Peer (Fred), and Steve May (Sherree). He is also survived by his sister, Anne Bierhorst and his grandchildren: Alex and Brittany May, Myles Sonnier (Sarah), Dominick and John Accardo, and Royce and Keagan Peer.
His mechanical engineering background came in quite handy on the home front as his love language was to fix things. He could fix practically anything, if you would let him; and if you wouldn’t let him, he would just tinker. Bill also enjoyed riding motorcycles for most of his life.
Bill’s family will host a memorial service on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 12 noon with visitation starting at 10:30 am. The service will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home (5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124).
