John Christopher Crennan Sr.

John Crennan, born and raised in the New York of the 1930’s, was reared by Irish immigrant parents. His father instilled a strong work ethic that carried John through life. Being raised in the Great Depression also taught John the principles of work and frugality.

He was an excellent writer, but he learned a trade rather than working by the pencil. But oh, how he loved to write.

He worked as an electrician, then a technician for a top-secret aeronautics company in Long Island (making ICBM’s in the 1960’s).

In 1959, he met, fell in love with, and married, Sonia Rossi. They met on a 4th of July weekend in Belmar, NJ. His captivating first line to Sonia?

“Want to go get steak for breakfast?”. They had 4 children in three years, the marriage would not last, seemingly, the stoic Irish was not amenable to the vivacious and strong-willed Italian girl.

John moved to Boston, continued writing, and produced an off-Broadway play in the 1970’s. Then, moved to San Francisco where he lived alone for over 30 years, working for city of San Francisco as a fire department dispatcher. He continued writing plays, though none were published.

He loved discoursing on politics, movies, the foibles of men (and women) and nature. He walked daily in the Presidio (a nature hike) in S.F.

He re-connected with family the past 2 years, when he was moved to Florida by his daughter, and had a whole new life being taken care of and reconnecting with son, John and brother Tom.

John was predeceased by his mother Agnes, father Christopher and sister Nancy. He is survived by his four children: John, Michael, Elisa and Van; his brother Tom, sister Cathleen and her children.

A celebration of life for John will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Meadowlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 4244 Madison Street, New Port Richey, FL 34652. Following the celebration of life will be a committal services from 3:00 PM to 3:15 PM at Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens, 4244 Madison St, New Port Richey, FL 34653.
