I Miss You Dad

I've gotten through the worst part,
The sea of endless tears.
I've managed to go on from there,
To make it through the year.

I've had my share of gladness,
And watched my children grow.
But one thing remains unchanged,

With sadness in my heart,  I wish you "Happy Fathers Day"  Wish I could call you or send you a card to give you this wish! Pops I miss you and think about you everyday. I am very thankful for all you did to help me become the person I am. Appreciate all the things you did in your life to provide for us! Love you POPS !!

When I think of the word grandpa the thoughts and feelings I get are of,  love, strength, kind heartedness, intelligence, dry sarcastic humor. It's because  grandpa was my grandpa that I associate these thoughts  and feelings to just the word grandpa. He was a great man.  O and I guess I can't forget that old reclining chair either.  Love you always grandpa.

Dad, the last thing you asked of your kids was to be here to celebrate your birthday. We were here Dad. Celebrating you birthday and life. We are so lucky to have you as a father. I remember waking up early and you would be sitting on the steps drinking your coffee. I'd sit with you and you'd put your arm around me and call me Lucy. I miss you so much Dad! I thought seeing you suffer was the hardest thing I've went through, until today, when we said goodbye. It was comforting to have my brothers and sister there to share this with. Dad, we all gathered for your birthday like you wanted. I'll miss you Pops!! I think about you every day and happy that your suffering is over. You will live on every day in and through us.

John and Joyce thank you both so much for helping me out when I frist started out. You both invited me to live with your family. John even helped me get my frist car.He was a funny guy to know and it seemed that he was always helping someone out--Always.Now I know he has been greatly rewarded in Heaven and I know that he is greatly missed by friends and family. May God comfort and bless his family that he left behind. He will be greatly missed. Love you all.

Grandpa I savor the memories and experiences we shared together. From the times when I was young and you lived in Ohio, to the trips I taged along with to Florida. I thank you for the knowledge you shared and most of all the time we went fishing together on that charter boat and Pete caught a seagull. You were an amazing man that lived an amazing life, and you will always be loved and brought to mind. May you please rest in peace because you deserve it.

Dear Grandpa,
     As a child I was never really popular or cool. One day in my 6th grade year, I was waiting for Grandpa to pick me up after school. All of a sudden a beautiful corvette came roaring up and stopped right by me. Everyone was looking in amazement as I jumped in and drove off. I felt like the coolest kid in school that day. 
    It was one of my fondest memories growing up and it molded me into the man I am today. Thank you for being awesome. I love you very much and you will always be in my heart. Love one-n-only Jason Petty

John,You were loved so very much. I never think of you without a smile on your face and your quick wit. Thank you for raising a strong, hardworking man who like yourself, loves all his family no matter what. Thanks for the small things like driving me to the Dr. when I was pregnant with Barb. I knew you has better things to do but you waited and always had a cup of ice water from White Castle for me. I remember walking the dog with you in Fl.and you pointing out the turtle paths. Thanks for showing the best fishing spots in Hudson and taking the kids to that animal farm by your house. Thank you for loving all of us, always. You are missed greatly. Rest in Perfection!!

I had the privilege to know John. He was one of the most caring helpful man that I have known. He so loved his family and enjoyed their visits. He was a wonderful cook. He cooked the Thansgiving turkey and stuffing for our shared neighborhood dinner. I especially loved his homemade macaroni and cheese. Truly one of the best I have ever had. Butch loved his biscuits and gravy. John had a caring heart and he shared our joys as well as our sorrows.  He was quick to lend a helping hand when needed. I shall miss seeing him on his porch and walking his dog or working on his boats and his motorcycle. He was always fixing something.We all will deeply miss him. My heart and prayers are with Joyce his wife as well as his six children and all his grandchildren. He had a caring supportive family who deeply loved him. He was truly blessed with all of them. Rest in peace John, and thank you for letting me into your family circle, and into your work truck. And for accepting  me  as the outsider and wild kid I was.! I still try and carry a few of your traits, but some I've yet to master your abilities to remain stable and calm in any circumstances. And rarely show anger nor stay mad at any one were exceptional .especially with us hoodlums. Your a very hard act to follow. But I believe the fishing must have had a lot to do with it! Words cannot begin to express the impact you've had on my life. You raised wonderful children, one that I'm lucky enough to call my dad. The values and drive you passed on to him, he's passed on to me; making me the strong lady I am today. You welcomed me into your home with open arms during school and you always supported me both on and off the field. I'm heartbroken I lost my grandpa but I gained an amazing guardian angel. Your memory will live on forever and I will always love you.

How can I put into words the privilege I have had in crossing paths with such a man in this life. John is the reason I am as I am today. He never tried to make me someone I'm not. but only taught me how to be the best of who I am. There was always  a security in life knowing he had my back. now that he has left us my heart breaks. I'm proud to say  I'm confident I can keep on going with confidence in this life to succeed as you did . My deepest respect Dad. Much love to Joyce, John, Don, Debbie, Darlene, David and Jenny. this may be harder and a little different than the last one i wrote. i guess i didn't submit it right and it disappeared into cyber space. 
    i met john the day he was looking to buy his house on Cherokee drive. i saw a strange car in the yard and being king of a nosy guy i walked over asked if i could help him in any way. we introduced ourselves and he said "i am thinking of buying this place. what is the neighborhood like"? i could tell right away he would fit right in with the retirement crowd on the street, and i told him he would like it there and he would like the people. before we were done i introduced him to ken adams the president of our club and we all talked for awhile. it must have worked because in no time he bought the house and started coming down every winter. 
    right away in the first winter there he through himself into working at the club. he and ken adams became very close and did everything at the club. even though he had COPD he worked all the smokey bingos, working the floor and calling numbers. he gave his all to the griffin park community club until it was final sale several years ago.
    shortly after moving down to the park john brought Christina (a nasty dispositioned little dog to live with him) she bit almost everyone who came in contact with her until john and the whole park civilized her. from that time on they were always together. Kenny not to be outdone also adopted a stray dog that wandered into the neighborhood, and every day and night you could see the two of them out walking their dogs. even when they were on oxygen the dogs got walked.
    at first we only saw john and he would talk about his wife and kids and we felt we all knew them, so when they started to come down they just fit right in. daughter Debbie came down to live in florida and moved in with dad. his batchelor pad was doomed. she through out his porch furniture and redecorated the house. everything was freshly painted and there would be no more rebuilding carburators on the kitchen table. she and marty stayed with jon until they bought a house and he was along again. 
     as the winters went by all of the kids came by to see what dad was doing in florida. david and his family came down many winters, johnny came down every year to see dad and to play golf. he was a regular vistor. some where along the early years wife joyce started to appear and everyone loved joyce. we wanted her down all the time but her care for her uncle and not being retired limited her time. daughter Darlene came down at least one winter and maybe more and granddaughter joyce ann was a frequent visitor. another granddaughter lived with them one winter while she finished college. 
     finally joyce retired, the house in ohio was sold and joyce came down to stay. Jennifer and family took the plunge and moved to be near mom and day and now there were two grandkids at the house almost everyday. this past year debby came back and moved next door. john had  his family mostly together sgain. 
    john loved a good neighborhood  party and he through many of them but none better than his brunches where he would make great sausage and bisquits for everyone. if there was a picnic he would be at the grill cooking all the meats. john loved his winters in florida.
    sadly it would not last forever and the COPD would start to slow him  down. i know he hated this and fought so hard not to give into it. i knew when i left for the summer i might never see him again. a large part of griffin park died with him, never to be the same.   rest in peace my friend as you will be truly missed.    butch

We are snowbirds and live just two doors up from John and Joyce.  John and his dog, Christine, were well known and well loved on the street.  John was Ken Adams right hand man at the club house and he, Roland, Pete Cumo and Grant Jackson, another snowbird, would all gather around Ken's little pickup every morning and decide what they were going to do that day.  Almost always it was something for the church's thrift shop or the club house.  John, Grant, Pete, Ken and Roland put a supper on at the club house once a month.  We women stayed out of the kitchen.  They also did most of the kitchen work for the Saturday breakfasts.  Roland and John loved to fish on the gulf and one day they swamped the boat. That was quite the adventure. 
John made many runs to Sam's for the club.  After Ken passed he became president and did a great job. Several of us got together on Mondays for supper out and dominoes after.  We also played pay me on Wednesdays.  John enjoyed that.  We had lots of neighborhood gatherings and John often furnished the burgers and did the cooking.  He loved the St. Paddy's breakfasts and he always made biscuits and gravy.  Any other gathering we had he made his famous and wonderful bread pudding.  Cherokee Drive will not be the same without him. We love you John.

to a man that i learn to repect he took a chance on me because every one said i was a mess up but when i got shot he was the first one by my side he was a man that u could look up to he let me play baseball with his boys john and don  when he went to work at ferguson van lines he let me help he was a teacher of many thing but losing him was a shock i did love him me and john and david use to go and do a packing job and then we fish we all talk on the c.b radios uncle john i will miss because u made my aunt joyce a very happy lady i like to carry on but i got tears in my eyes so i will close for now and tell aunt joyce i love with all my heart

Grandpa. I will never forget the first time I ever watched Star Wars was with you. You were babysitting me and it came on TV. I thought it was boring looking so you found a VHS, played the movie, and fast forwarded to the first scene where a Lightsaber was used to show me how cool it is. Ever since then Star Wars has played a role in my life which would define me as a person. I'm happy to know that anytime I share my love of Star Wars with my children, that I'm also sharing a part of you.

I have so many great memories of Uncle John, its hard to pick just one. And even harder to express.  I remember he never had an unkind word to say to anyone or about anyone.  And I feel very blessed for having him in my life.

Joyce, some of my best memories are the summer days I spent at your and uncle Johns house. I remember swimming in the pool and mom and dads wedding but most of all I remember the since of family. Uncle John was a sweet funny man who always made me feel welcome. Know that though he is dearly missing that he will never be forgotten.

My favorite memory of John is on the day of my wedding with his daughter, Jennifer. He asked me if I was sure that I wanted to marry her. I knew he was joking. Since then, we had good times and challenging times, but he was always there with us, to help us along the way. He will always be in the hearts and minds in those of us that have known him. He will live on in our memories and stories passed on. 

Joyce, know that I will always be there with you and love you.

Grandma. It's hard to believe it's been 12 years since I was introduced to the Sweet/Petty family. I remember the first time I came over to yours and Grandpa's house in Eastgate. I'm not going to lie I was a little nervous at first meeting the Grandparents but I quickly became very comfortable around everyone. I have a lot of good memories being over there swimming and eating. Grandpa was an amazing man and I could tell how much he loved you just by the way he looked at you. It always amazed me how much you guys still got along and loved each other after all of those years together. Melanie Lilly and I were all super upset that you guys moved down to Florida but knew it was the best thing to do. We had tons of fun through out the summers coming over with all the family even on days when it was just us. I'm so sorry for your loss and want you to know I'm thinking about you. We love you Grandma and hope to see you soon.

Joyce I know this is a difficult time for you and your family,just find comfort in knowing John is no longer suffering and he is surrounded by people who love him.Wake up each day and smile because you made it another day. John loved you very much and one day you will get a sign from him that he is okay,But, until that day comes lean on your family and try to find peace and comfort until you and John are together again...

John at one of the neighborhood brunches, he was our biscuit and gravy and baked beans chef. He was also one to keep an eye on our home when we were away, mowing our lawn if needed. He was a wonderful friend and neighbor, and will be missed.

You will be missed uncle John I am sorry my family didn't get to meet you and see what a great guy you are My favorite memory is the day you dad and me went to east fork fishing You bought that new boat cause the Sea Pickle wouldn't start yet again We fished boasted and fished some more swam it was a good day. I know we are all less for your leaving but we will all meet again.

Paul and I have only known John since 2008 but got to know him as a wonderful neighbor and a dedicated member of the Club.  What I remember is that each fall when we arrived in Florida, John and his dog Christine, would come and greet us before we even unpacked.  Later is was John and Tilly, our little walking buddy, that would greet us once we arrived on Cherokee Drive.  We will miss John but are so glad that we got to know him and, of course, Joyce.  Our love and condolences to Joyce and family.

I could write a book about the memories I have with you. I am maybe just now realizing how fortunate I was to spend so much time with you, and wish everyone one was that lucky. I learned almost everything from you. In my very unstable world you and Grandma were the pillars of stability. I was never very good at letting people know how much I loved them and what they meant to me, and I'm so glad I got to tell you how important you both were to me on my wedding
Day. I'll never forget getting to come work with you in the summers, all of our fishing trips, going to the Brickyard with you, driving around in the corvette and the Mustang (and breaking down on the freeway lol), going to play poker at the Seminole hard rock, the work trip Michael and I took with you and slept in the trailer (I learned what a lot lizard was LOL)  all of my clearest memories are with you and Grandma and it's not by accident.  You were the only people in my life that I knew without a doubt loved me unconditionally. You were without a doubt my biggest influence in life. I love you and will miss you dearly. I remember clear as day being at the hospital with Uncle Clint and him telling me when he got out of there the 3 of us would all go fishing together and I've always been a little disappointed we never got the chance, but I don't think he meant when he got out of the hospital....I hope you guys are having fun and I'm looking forward to joining you when I get out of here. I love you.

My one and only Grandpa. Even if there was another, they would not compare. You are the true epitome of what a man should be. We were all so lucky to have you in our lives. You worked hard and took care of your family. You're kind hearted and funny and you loved my Grandma endlessly. I remember when you would sit in your recliner in Cincinnati and feed Hershey Kissess to cuddles and when you would call me Jaws Ann in that goofy voice because I talk too much. I may not have ever told you but I had a wonderful time with just me and you when I came to Florida when you first moved there. It was really nice to spend time like that with you. I still have the picture of our little buddy too. I love you and miss you so much, Grandpa. I hope it's true and I have the opportunity to see you again. Forever and ever in my heart.

I have always had so much respect for you. I wish had more memories with you! I feel as if I missed out! I miss and love you more than words can explain. I appreciate everything you did for our family! You have and always will hold a special place in my heart! I love you and will miss until we meet again.

Dear Grandpa, I love you so much. One of my favorite memories with you is when I would never eat bologna until you rolled it up just like a hotdog. Grandpa I love so so much.

I have came to this memorial page so many times in the last couple days trying to find the right way to say goodbye to you Grandpa and I could never accomplish that. I've come to realize this is because I am not ready to tell you goodbye so we will go with "See ya later." Finding peace after your passing has been really hard but I am able to find it in the memories I have of you. You coming up from Florida with your motorcycle AND tweety bird helmet, the way you would pull your bottom lip up to your nose, when I would kiss your stubbly cheek goodbye when leaving grandmas. These are just a few memories. As silly as it sounds I keep telling myself you are finally with Cuddles! :) That gives me the most peace in my heart. I love you Grandpa-knowing you are free from pain is worth all of us suffering right now. You will forver be in our hearts. I learned a lot from this man, he was very tolerent, I don't remember him saying anything bad about anyone. I loved him from the age of 6 or 7. If I ever needed anything he and my sister was always there.(thank you both for that).R.I.P. John.

I was very saddened to hear that Uncle John had passed away. I have many fond memories of Uncle John from when I was younger. I will never forget how he coached me in baseball, and playing with Donald and Johnny. He also gave me a chance when he helped me get into trucking and sold me a truck so that I too could be an owner/operator. He was a good man and I admire him for all the things he done for me and believing in me. Rest in Peace Uncle John. Aunt Joyce, I love you and I am praying for you and your family.

Dad, I'm so glad we got to spend our time together. You will never know how the small things meant so much to me. I remember you, Debbie , and Uncle Mike coming to San Diego to visit me. What a great time. You were rhe best coach who took the neighborhood misfits and made us winners. My heart is broken, I will miss you forever

I come to this page over and over hoping to come up with the perfect words but I can't get them out through the tears. I have so many memories I should be able to write a book. The sad part is the memories that stand out the most are of me being a spoild brat and my dad giving in to me. What I need to say is; "I'm sorry Dad for being that daughter. My love, respect and admiration for you will be carried in my heart for ever. I will alway be a Daddy's girl, I will always be your Lucy and I will always Love You.".

 I am very sorry to hear about grandpa passing away. To Grandma, John, Donald, Debbie, David, Jenny and my Mother I am truley sorry for your loss and I hope you all find peace and comfort knowing that grandpa is in a better place! Grandpa was always a great example of how a man should be when it comes to working hard for what you wanted in life. I like to think that I learned some of that through him(along with my own father). When i'm working late or stuck on a tough job I often find myself thinking that it's not as bad as being on the road away from all of the people that you care most about in this world. Loseing Grandpa has also confirmed that life is short and you should live your life to the fullest and enjoy the time you have here on this planet. I love you all, and may god grant you strength to get through these tough times

My grandpa and I went fishing one year we caught some fish for dinner. Hope he has a nice time in the afterlife or where ever he goes. I will miss him dearly. John where ever you are now jut know we will miss you.

We miss you so much grandpa. The memories I have of you are truly endless and every day something takes me back to childhood and I get flashbacks of you-- or something you used to say or do. Rest In Paradise Uncle John, you and Aunt Joyce were a huge influence in my life. I love you both and you will be greatly missed. My prayers and thoughts are with all of the Petty family. Love you all.
