Born on July 13, 1953, in Valparaiso, Indiana, Marcia lived a life filled with strength, compassion, creativity, and unconditional love. She was the beloved daughter of the late Eldon Birky and LaVera Gingritch, both of whom preceded her in death years earlier. Marcia graduated from Boone Grove High School and dedicated much of her life to serving others.
From 1980 to 1989, she proudly served as part of the Woman’s Auxiliary at the Lake Eliza Fire Department, where she was known for her caring spirit and willingness to help her community. She later continued her public service career with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, serving honorably as a Correctional Officer for 20 years, from January 13, 1991, until her retirement on January 13, 2011. Marcia took great pride in her work and earned the respect of those around her through her dedication, resilience, and compassionate nature.
Above all else, Marcia’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose heart was always open to those she loved. She had a special gift for making people feel cared for, welcomed, and supported no matter the circumstance. Her kindness, wisdom, and sense of humor left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Marcia found happiness in life’s simple and beautiful moments. She loved gardening and could often be found caring for her flowers and plants with patience and pride. She enjoyed art, traveling, and playing the piano, and she treasured creating memories with the people closest to her. Whether sharing stories, spending time with her grandchildren, or simply enjoying time with family, those moments meant the world to her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Allen Schmidt (77); her children, Terry Schoonover (46) and Casey Schoonover (43); her Daughter-in-law, Matina (40); her cherished grandchildren, Dakota (26), Dalilah (24), Jaylynn (18), Jayden (16), Danika (21), and Cayden (17); and her siblings, Jerry Birky and Nina Sanders.
Though her family’s hearts are heavy with loss, they take comfort in the countless memories, lessons, and love she leaves behind. Marcia will be deeply missed every day and forever remembered for the strength, warmth, and love she brought into the lives of others.
