Kentucky in 1926 - a poor Appalachian coal-mining town, to parents,
Daniel Logan Brown and Minnie Lou Slusher Brown. While the
Browns lived a financially poor existence (Pappy worked in the
Kentucky coal mine), they were wealthy with love and family.
It was learned fairly early on that Mary had a hearing deficit and
she was sent to a special school for a time. Unfortunately, that
hearing problem followed her all of her life.
She does tell a story about two of her brothers while playing
around with a saw, actually made a deep cut in her leg. Like most
families in that day and age, they treated it themselves and went
on with their lives. There have been times in the past years where
she sometimes had pain in that leg, she believed it came from the
antics of her brothers.
Mary moved to Dayton, Ohio, in the late forties with her
Mother, as did her sisters, Mae and Betty. Her oldest brother, Bill,
had located there earlier while her older sister, Goldie was located
down the road in Cincinnati. It was in Dayton that she met the
love of her life, Sam Cain. After a brief courtship, they went to
Kentucky and got married in April of 1949 with sister, Goldie and
her husband as their witnesses. After Sam's retirement from NCR,
they subsequently moved to Florida, taking Ma with them. She
loved going fishing with Sam. Sisters Mae and Betty also
relocated there in 1973.
Like all sisters, they loved each other dearly ... but would also
have their share of spats. Mae and Betty often accused Mary
of having a Jekyll and Hyde personality. But in the end, they
were always there for each other.
Having no children of her own, Mary embraced all of her
nieces and nephews, as well as many of the residents of Buena
Vista Mobile Home Park. Her best friend, Georgie preceded her
in death by four short months. Other close friends included
Terry and Terry Mae (her Angel), Chuck and Bobbie, Bob,
Henry, Rick, Bella and Nancy. Also Nancy, Darlene and Pat.
And I have to believe there are several restaurant owners
and a waitresses in Holiday who will miss their Java Lady and her
jokes.
A special thank you to family, friends and all those who
touched her heart. We are eternally grateful!
