Ruth was born on September 19, 1926 in the Bronx, New York, the daughter of Fride and Wendla Jansson. She was the second oldest in her family, having an older brother Henry, a younger brother Bernard and a sister, Barbara. At the age of one and half years old, her family returned to Terjarv, Finland. Ten years later they came back to the Bronx and settled into a walkup apartment on the fifth floor. Her toned legs were a product of all those stairs she had to climb and descend everyday.
On June 21, 1958 she married the love of her life, Karl Ahlkvist and settled in Staten Island, New York. They had three daughters, Louise, Lynn and Lisa. They attended and were active at Messiah Lutheran Church.
In 1993 they retired to Oneonta, New York living next door to daughter Lisa and her husband Tom and their four sons. The grandsons would run over often to see what treats Nana had been baking.
In 2005 Karl, Ruth and Lynn moved to Charlottesville, Virginia to be near their oldest daughter Louise and her husband, Keywood and their large family. She now had six additional grandchildren to enjoy.
After the passing of her husband, Karl, Ruth and Lynn moved to Florida to be near Lisa and Tommy. Ruth, soon after, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Ruth will always be remembered for her gift of hospitality, her love of life and laughter and her caring manner. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to ten and great grandmother to thirteen. She loved her family.
The family would like to give special thanks to all the wonderful caring people working for Hospice.
