I’ve tried to come up with the words to describe and commemorate the great and legendary Alexander James Murphy.. But alas the words escape me. There are no words that have yet been written that can describe the tremendous and extravagant energy that resided inside Alex.. To those who knew him he was undoubtedly a best friend, and to those who hadn't met him yet he was simply a legend. A long haired bare chested man in a Hawaiian shirt smiling uncontrollably and plucking a Ukulele. 

Alex was the first friend I ever made, even before my little brother was born I had already made a brother in Alex. We were born two weeks apart and were companions before either of us was a month old. We had the same baby sitter growing up and our moms were co-teachers which means there are less than a handful of memories from my childhood that don’t involve Alex. When he moved to Iowa in middle school I went to visit and stayed with the Murphy’s for a week, again when he moved to Indiana (which was awesome cuz it was a lot closer than Iowa to Michigan) I went to visit, in college when I moved to Florida Alex came to stay with me for a week (that turned into a month and a half but I did not mind one bit). Although we drifted apart we never lost contact with each other. The last text I got from Alex was him and I trying to make plans for me to visit him and meet his daughter which he sent pictures of frequently and always told me that she was “the girl version of him” and how amazing she was. I am sad that we weren’t able to follow through on those plans.. I’m so taken back by this whole thing I don’t know if I even believe it’s real yet.. I keep checking my phone to see if his obituary is still up or if I had finally woken from this terrible nightmare. 

All my energy goes out to the Murphy family, I am so very sorry for all of our losses..

I can’t wait to see you again, you beautiful beautiful man..

Heartbroken doesn’t come close to describe how I feel. It’s taken me a few days to process this & honestly, I still haven’t. This has been difficult. Due to the circumstances, this is me paying my respects and saying goodbye, and, in respect of Murph, with the help of some nine-year-old bourbon & Papadosio jamming in the background, I’ll try my best to do just that.

Alex, I thank God for placing you back in my life when He did. You & Shannon moving back was a huge blessing to Ann & me, having friends in a similar stage of life and on a similar path with Christ as we were & are. We always looked forward to dinner on Wednesday nights, letting the girls crawl around and look at each other and the conversations that ensued after. We will never forget that season of life, being new parents trying to figure things out on our own but having friends to lean-in on and enjoy the struggle with. What began as a rekindled friendship quickly turned into a deep & genuine brotherhood. You were my favorite person to hang out with, discuss life with, and figure out how to become a better man, husband, and father with. You helped me do just that. I wish I could have done better to help you. I’ll never forget the last conversation we had at my house. We discussed how difficult it is as a man, especially a young man just starting in his career, to balance work & family, and you expressed that a concern you had for me was being too one-track minded when it came to work. You emphasized how important family is. You were never one to judge someone else or tell them how they should live their life, but on this occasion, it was something I needed to hear, so you spoke up. I can’t help but look back now and wonder if this was something you wanted to leave me with. I suppose it doesn’t matter, but I’ll never forget it. My heart breaks for Aletheia. I know how much you loved her & I hope someday to get to tell her that. Thank you for our friendship. I’ll cherish and remember it forever.

One of the most sincere independent man and friend I've met. I got to spend a solid week with him a year ago and dig into scripture and we both learned alot. We both enjoyed rootbeer , gingerbeer and liver and good real talks. I'll miss him dearly. Hugs to all the family I'm sincerely sorry for your loss. Reach out if you want to talk. 

On our farm Alex was gentle and kind, he loved being outdoors working in the dirt with his bare feet. 

Dan and I have fond memories of Alex. Thinking of him just makes us smile. We are so very sorry.

Alex! My brother, my companion, a fellow lover and dreamer, a true role model and inspiration. A leader of Light and Love..the epitome of Light and Love in human form. You are such a special being, you walked with grace, integrity,  understanding, compasssion, humility, and humbleness. You set the bar for how people ought to act and strive to be. You brought out the best in everyone..always. You are loved and missed immensely by everyone who got the pleasure to experience you as a human. I'll never forget our late nights in nature dancing under the moon and stars, slack lining, playing the ukulele, hiking, and talking about God. You experienced more life in your 27 years than most people could in 100.  I am forever thankful for the lessons you taught me. If I am able to passionately pursue my dreams at a quarter of the rate you did my life will be a true success. Thank you for loving me and letting me love you, I cannot wait til we meet again brother. I love you so much. 

Though we didn't keep in touch as much as we used to, I still consider Murphy to be one of my best friends.  The few times we were able to connect over the last couple of years reminded me of how much fun we used to have together in high school and the occasional trip I would make down to IU. Murphy was one of the most interesting individuals that I have ever met, he had the rare gift of contagious positivity that followed everywhere he went. I have always admired his confidence, intelligence, and ability to live the life he wanted to live whether it be in a van traveling the world or at his house living off the land. Every time we would connect, Murphy never failed to have a new plan or new life goal (ukulelist, physical therapist, archeologist, farmer, some sort of nomad come to mind). I genuinely believe his ability to pick up any topic so naturally led him to finding new goal or interest every time we caught up. He was remarkably smart and I will miss learning about his next crazy goal, reading his hilarious but informative Instagram posts, and catching up on his recent unique life stories. I wish we still had time to make new memories together, but will always cherish the ones we made.  Murphy was an incredible person and will be greatly missed.

Alex had such an incredible personality and spirit, and we will all miss him so very much.  Getting to know him, spending time talking about the things he enjoyed and was passionate about, and seeing him with Aletheia were wonderful times I’ll always cherish.  Having him as part of our own family through Kaylee was a tremendous blessing, and feel I’m a better person for having known him.  His light and life will live on forever in the memories and love by everyone who was touched by him.

Murphy's a great dude. He was the first person that I was able to chat with on Marco Polo. I appreciate the way he approached life with vigor, adventure, and trust. May he rest in peace and power for he inspired many to carry that in this life. 

Murphy was one of my best friends and I consider him a brother. We met our Freshman year of High School when he moved to town and into the house across the street from my grandmother.  Our friendship started with ding-dong-ditching around the neighborhood and quickly turned into one of the closest friendships I've ever had. Murphy was extremely outgoing, confident, and a genuinely nice guy. I would describe him as easy-going, intelligent, and passionate about so many things. He was quick to smile, and slow to anger. He was the friend who went all out to make a memory special. It's hard for me to put to words what kind of friend he was, but he had a huge impact on my life and the lives of all of those around him. I will never forget the years we spent riding around town in his Jeep listening to Blink-182, or the fun we had as roommates in college. I wish I could go back to the days of him talking about his huge thoughts on life, God, space, nutrition, meditation, or music. He talked about his dream of owning a farm and living off his own land. When I think of him I imagine him with his long hair, smirking, walking around shirtless showing off his heart surgery scar and playing his ukulele. There was no one quite like Murph! 

One memory I'd like to share is "dress like a teacher" day in high school. Murph didn't tell anyone and showed up with his head completely bald in the middle to match one of the teachers. You could not walk passed him in the hallway without laughing. He always knew how to make people happy. 

Murphy, you were loved by many and you will be missed. Thank you for being my friend.
