

Carl graduated from Bicknell High School in 1959. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Seabee Battalion. He served four years of active duty and two years of inactive duty during the years 1960-1966. He retired from the United Mine Workers Association. He was a proud lifetime member of the American Legion Post 44, Veterans of Foreign Wars, N.R.A. and Red Brush Rifle Range. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, spending time with family, socializing, and traveling the country.
He was preceded in death by parents, Cecil and Virginia Smith; and his wife, Joyce (Kinder) Smith.
Carl is survived by his daughters, Cindy James (Mark Dyer) and Angela Caldwell (Bill); son, Thomas; one brother, Jim Smith (Sharon); step-sisters, Cheryl and Ruthann; grandchildren, Dustin, Burton, Brandi, Ronny and Wesley; seven great grandchildren; and lifelong friend, Cheryl Ellis.
Services will be 9:00 AM, Saturday, September 8, 2012, at Newburgh Old Lock & Dam. American Legion Kapperman Post 44 will conduct military honors.
