Jim began his career shortly after graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University and spending four years in the Army as a Signal Corps Operator during the Korean War. He was Group Manager for Sears Roebuck Corporation for 35 years. Jim’s final assignment was the Sears stores in Evansville, Indiana. During his final years while in Evansville, he was actively involved with mentoring young business people and volunteered with many organizations. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, served on the Board of the Evansville Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and Junior Achievement.
During the 1990’s Jim and his family became involved with the local humane society in Warrick County. Through his fundraising and direction, along with others, a progressive no-kill facility was built and developed to help rescue and save orphaned and stray animals. Upon his departure from this facility, he had saved over 10,000 animals, bringing to the Tri-State the concepts of juvenile and mobile feline spay/neuter clinics, Open Cat Rooms and a Learning Library within the center itself.
In 2008, he again had a progressive concept of assisting underwriting a non-profit corporation that would offer services for animals that are very much needed in our community. In May of 2009, the Shelby’s Animal Rescue fund DBA Red Woof Lodge opened its doors in northern Vanderburgh County. Two years later the concept is now reality and offers education programs for Scouts, pet owners, and pet therapy. He helped create a business that would through animal boarding, training, grooming and daycare, offer funding and programs to assist animals. This kindness and love for animals will be long remembered after his passing through the programs that have been developed and offered to the community.
James was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Reid Yohe of Newburgh; daughter, Jennifer Yohe-Cullipher (Ricky) of Phoenix, AZ and son, David Yohe of Evansville.
Services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, officiated by Michael Partridge with burial at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Wednesday from 11:30 AM until service time at the funeral home.
