

John graduated from North High School in 1959. He retired from Whirlpool in 1997, after 35 years of service. He was an Army veteran.
He was a founding member and past president of Tri-State Model A Club. John was an avid car enthusiast. He enjoyed drag racing in the 60’s and early 70’s.
John was a Scoutmaster with two sons and a grandson who are Eagle Scouts and two grandsons who are working toward being Eagle Scouts. He made two trips to Philmont, NM Scout Ranch.
He was a member of Newburgh United Methodist Church.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Katherine Tanner.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary “Susie” Tanner of Newburgh; daughter, Kathy (Pope) Hayden (Joe) of Newburgh; son, Rob Pope (Dena) of Churubusco, IN; daughter, Connie (Pope) Peckenpaugh of Indianapolis, IN; son, Barry Tanner (Kim) of Mt. Vernon, IN; grandchildren, Kelsey Hayden, Lydia Hayden, Joseph Hayden, Robby Pope, Valerie Pope, Tanner Peckenpaugh, Marissa Peckenpaugh, Katie Tanner, and Nathan Tanner; brother Bill Tanner (Joyce); brother, Richard Tanner (Charlotte); sister, Wanda Powell; nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, with military rites and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM and Tuesday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
