

Loretha Stowers Washington was born in Forest, Mississippi on June 27, 1937. She was the youngest daughter of three children to the late Rev. John Berry Sullivan Thompson and Belle Lucille Stowers Thompson.
Loretha was a beacon of inspiration and resilience in her family, breaking new ground as the first to graduate Midway Vocational High School and subsequently relocating to the bustling city of Chicago, Illinois. There, she embarked on a remarkable career as an Inspector at Stewart and Warner, showcasing her leadership skills and dedication. Driven by a passion for medicine, Loretha pursued her studies at the National Education Center, in Oak Lawn, IL. Where her hard work paid off as she graduated at the top of her class, receiving her medical assistant certification. Her career continued to flourish as she took up a vital role with the Chicago Board of Education, where she dedicated years of service before her retirement in 2015. Loretha was not just a professional; she was an active and devoted member of her church and community, embodying her faith through countless acts of kindness. Whether offering support to family, friends, or even strangers, her compassionate nature made a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know her.
Loretha transitioned peacefully at the home of her devoted daughter on Friday, May 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind her cherished partner, Percy Harper, with whom she shared a profound connection since childhood at the tender age of 12. Loretha was a dedicated mother to her three children: Hiwartha, Derrick, and Dr. Belinda Thompson, each of whom will carry her spirit forward. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Rev. John Berry Sullivan Thompson and Bell Lucille Stowers Thompson, as well as her brothers, Ellis Jay and Daniel (Luella) Thompson, who welcomed her with open arms in eternity. Loretha is survived by her caring sister-in-law, Velma (Ellis) Thompson, and a vibrant legacy of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory. Her gentle spirit and unwavering love will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
An Evening Visitation for Loretha will be held Friday, May 16, 2025 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home. A Morning Visitation will occur Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 10:00am-11:00am following with a Funeral Service at 11:00am located at Blake Lamb Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Oak Woods Cemetery, 1035 E 67th St, Chicago, IL 60637.
