Born on August 17, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, Steven Thomas Mixon was the cherished son of Percy L. Mixon Sr. and Marion Avent, both of whom preceded him in death. One of four siblings, he is also reunited in passing with his beloved brother, Michael Mixon.
Steve accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized while attending St. Anselm Catholic School. He went on to attend Dunbar High School and later graduated from Hyde Park High School, where he discovered his passion for tennis—a love that would stay with him for life. After high school, Steve followed a calling to help others and embarked on a career in the medical field, serving patients with compassion and dedication at hospitals across Chicago, including Mercy/Insight, Mt. Sinai, Holy Cross, and UIC.
As a young man, Steve embraced his identity as a proud member of the LGBT community. There, he found a second family and a place where his vibrant spirit could shine. Known for his warmth, humor, and natural charisma, Steve lit up every room he entered. He became a vocal advocate for equality and LGBTQ+ rights—and yes, he even graced the stage in drag! Whether in a mini dress or a hospital uniform, Steve was unforgettable.
A favorite line from his cherished poem Desiderata speaks volumes about how he lived:
"You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here."
Steve carried that truth with him and shared it with others, offering grace, laughter, and light wherever he went.
Steve was the life of every party. If there was a gathering—be it a barbecue, holiday dinner, wedding, graduation, or drag show—you could count on him to be there, wine box in hand, ready to dance, pose for pictures, and lovingly call someone “shady” with a grin. Even in his final battle with cancer, Steve’s spirit never dimmed. His love for life and for the people around him remained unwavering.
He leaves behind two loving brothers, Percy “Mickey” Mixon Jr. and Paul Mixon; Aunt’s, Uncle’s and nieces and nephews; two goddaughters, Zaraida (Kenneth) and Alaxandria (Williamson); and three precious god-grandchildren, Xaraida, Kamarie, and William. Steve is also mourned by a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and chosen family who were touched by his generous heart and joyful presence.
As he joins his ancestors, we honor Steve’s extraordinary life and the indelible mark he left on us all.
