A few thoughts about my Mother-in-Law, things she used to say, do and forever memories ( not in any particular order...)

God love him/her
What are you cooking that's good for supper?
I really love those enchiladas you made me
Your house is beautiful
Your Christmas tree is gorgeous
Love you with all my heart
Is that coffee fresh?
I love a miracle whip sandwich with salt and pepper on it ( with a little slurp sound)
You look like a model ( yes she said this and yes it always made me feel good!)
You and Richard are good together
Just pray
You are a great host
It never hurt me or my kids ( when we would discuss the benefits or NOT of buttering crackers for babies or putting cereal in the kids' bottles)
You guys always make me feel special
The many TV discussions about Jag ( she really had the hots for the guy in that show), The Food Network, Forensic Files, Matlock, and many others...
The never wavering, unconditional love she had for her family, holy moly the things she put with!!! She had faith; huge, strong, unending faith that her children would do the right things and live good, Christian lives and that God would protect them.
No matter how rotten she felt, she always asked how everyone else was and what was going on with them, self centered she was not!
Shaking her bootie to the oldies
Slurping her hot coffee
Leaving her kitchen a mess until she felt like cleaning it
Cooking whatever anyone asked for, anytime they asked for it
Sneaking sweets, and greens, and water, and tomatoes, and candy, and carbs almost every chance she got! 
The brave choice she made to end her life, at home, surrounded by family. 
She will be greatly missed by me and everyone...

Grandma's Eulogy; My name is Alan Joseph Harper Jr...This name was given to me by my father Alan Sr...he was given the name by my grandparents William and Veronica Harper. 

My grandfather died a while back, but my grandmother the fighter that she was lived till she was 83 years old!! We celebrate her life today!!

I knew my grandmother as a feisty Southside Irish woman...she was tough as nails...tough in discipline and more importantly tough in love!

I knew her to love 4 things above all!!
The first (something I'm sure I inherited) and that's food...my grandmother loved her food. 
In her last days the blind eye would say she was trying different foods because nothing tasted good to her do to her condition, but I like to believe that she wanted to taste as many wonderful flavors (even in small bites) as she could before her time came to an end. 

The second love lead to the 3rd and that was her husband William and you can say after giving birth to 12 children she loved William a little too much! 

That's a great segue into her 3rd love...her family...she was a provider, a nurturer, and a protector...and she was able to protect her family because she and all that she loved was protected by her final love, her faith!! 

Catholicism...my grandmother (as I often describe her) is 3rd in line next to the Virgin Mary and Mother Theresa as the most Catholic woman to ever rome the earth. If the Catholic Church ever decided to let married women become priest she would be the first in line...some would argue that she would even be in line for saint hood...and if giving birth to 12 children and successfully raising 9 children wasn't miracle enough, her cooking would definitely be considered. 

I had the opportunity to spend some of my grandmother's final hours with her and it was one of my life's greatest lessons. 

I'm a correctional officer and I work nights so when I heard my grandmother was put on hospice I drove to see her as soon as my shift ended. I was nervous to see her because she has always been so pleasant and I didn't know how I would take seeing her helpless and in pain. 
She put my worries at ease when I walked in (still in uniform) and she jokingly put her hands up and said, officer please don't arrest me!

I knew then that there wasn't any stopping this woman's resolve for joy. 

Later in the afternoon I sat watching all the sad faces in the room (including mine) when we heard a knock on the door and in walked in a handsome medical technician who was there to turn off 
the defibrillator. 

Tech; "Hello, how are you young lady?" 

Grandma; "I'm just great, I'm about to get up and dance," as she shimmied her shoulders. 

Tech; "I bet you could teach me a thing or two?!" 

Grandma; " I know I could...at least in my younger days...maybe not now!" 

It's then I realized that in my some of my grandmother's final moments, she was flirting with the technician. 

That's what I will hold closest to my heart...the thought that in some of her precious final breaths she decided to use them to make us laugh...knowing that she was going to pass on, she made us 
smile...I love you Grandma Harper and you will never be forgotten!

Mom you will always hold a special place in my heart, as I did with you. Keep protecting me and I promise I will think and pray for you everyday!

Mom, I miss u so much it hurts. You were there for me in my happiest times and my low's. Mom you made me in the woman I am today. You showed me how to love, to show compassion and to care for others. When people ask, How do you do this type of work being a CNA? I tell them from my  mom . I Always loved our time together,  going to your house for coffee and spending the afternoon. I would get tickled by you saying you we're putting the coffee on when I called. All these things and more will forever be in my heart. But I'm also happy that your not suffering anymore. That your in heaven with our father and all our loved ones. Your loving daughter,  always Julie

Grandma (Alice), We had some good times and some bad times. More good than bad. I miss the hell out of you. I miss cooking for you and you wondering what spices I am putting in the food. You would say, "what spices are you putting in now?" Cleaning the fridge out while you were sitting there was a no no. You always wanted us to keep that tablespoon of potatoes, or the 3 beets or whatever small item you were saving. So I did, you said, "you were going to eat it" 3 weeks later, we were throwing it out. Anyway, I miss you and love you very much. (George)

My visit with Grandma Harper the Wednesday before she passed away....
It was laying heavy on my heart to leave work and go see her.  I was going out of town the next few days and was afraid I wouldn't get back in time. I'm an insider/outsider family member, sister of Tim's, Best Friend/"Sista" of Ron's :)  It was an hour of conversation with her that I'll forever cherish!  We talked about her decision to go on to Heaven and see Jesus's face, if she would know her loved ones that were already there and if it would look like streets of gold.  She told me she loved my outfit (which was nothing exciting) but she always loved my outfits even if I was in sweats, gym shoes, had a pony tail and was sweating!!  She said "no regrets", she didn't want anyone to have any regrets. She told me "I had a beautiful home the last 5 years.  
Tim & Roni made her feel as if it was her home too.  I'll miss her compliments, our fun conversations at the backyard parties and family gatherings.  She was always positive, had a smile on her face and called me "baby doll".  I love you Grandma Harper and I hope Heaven is everything we talked about.

Farewell to the lady that taught me I couldn't expect others to love me if I didn't love myself. A lady that had a warm heart and a light that shone so bright. She lived her life filled with love, laughter, and faith. A faith she never veered from. She had an undying love for God and taught us the same values. She will always be remembered as my kind loving Grandmother and I will miss her greatly.  She may not be of this earth any longer, but she lives forever in my heart.

You were an amazing woman and the best grandma in the world. We had a wonderful relationship and I'm so glad that we were so close. You had a wonderful sense of humor, which made you see the humor I had. I will miss calling you my "you know what" and showing you my big white moon, but now I am taking the place in the family of the "you know what." Haha I always wanted you to be there when I had my first child, but that was not the case. It makes me so happy you were able to be there when I married Angel though! I am honored that I was given the chance to interview you and write a paper on you! There were so many funny questions I had to ask and it was awesome that we were so close to where we could discuss them! I miss you dearly, but it makes me happy that you are finally at peace. I love you gram. I know you are always with me in my heart.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time of loss.  Aunt Ronnie always greeted me with a warm smile and hug.   I have such fond memories from growing up around her and most of her family even if it was just on the holidays.  She was a beautiful person with the sweetest soul and personality that only she could contain.  I know she will be missed by so many, but she lives on in the hearts and memories of her children and grandchildren.  I always hate saying goodbye so until we meet again Aunt Ronnie!  Love you.

Heaven gained another beautiful angel. She was the best grandma I could ever ask for and also an amazing best friend. I will surely miss the nights I sat in your room and we just talked for hours and the days I came home on my breaks to spend lunch with you. I'm just happy you don't have to suffer anymore and you got your wish of being with the Heavenly Father. I love you gram so much and I will miss you with all my heart! R.I.P January 23 11:48 a.m

We shared lots of good times and many memories. I first met Veronica when I was in high school and my brother Don introduced her as the wonderful girl he had met that he was going to marry. Not too long after that I had the privilege of being a bridesmaid in their wedding. Then, while still in high school, I would take the train and then a bus to their home on South Morgan Street or South Sangamon in Chicago and baby sit with their oldest, Patsy. We had many good times together, watching our children grow up, sharing in their marriages and just special occasions together. She was a wonderful person and will be missed. You are the light of my life Mom and I know you will always be in my heart. I wish we had more time together   I heart is warn from your light but feels empty without you here. I will miss talking to you while driving home as you always put a smile on my face. I feel in my heart your presence will be with us all always.  I miss you very much. Always live you forever till we are together in God's time

I miss my mom so very much. She always would say or ask us if she was a good mother. I know we all agreed she was a fantastic mother. She taught us all so much, and was there for us even if we were not on the best behavior. I pray that I can be strong like you were mom and as spiritual. I know you are up in heaven with our dear Lord and his mother plus all our relatives and friends.   I go to call you everyday and then I remember you are not here.  My heart breaks but then I remember you are not hurting anymore and can do what you want.  I know you are always in my heart. Love you so much and miss you tremendously. See you one day.

Mom, I don't know where to begin...so much that I feel that we could of shared together and said to one another. Just not enough time. I love you with my whole heart. I will miss you so very much. Mom, my heart is incomplete without you here. I feel lost and unsure of what to do next with myself. I walk past your chair and want you to get on it and ride down the stairs for your coffee and a sweet roll. There are so many more things I can share about my beautiful mother, it would take hours, maybe weeks. MOM, I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU. R.I.P.
