Agnes Elizabeth Miholich, 98, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2018, born September 7, 1919 in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Christine Sinkovich and John Prikosovits. She graduated from Saint Joseph University nursing program, initially using her training as a Navy nurse during WWII, tending the wounded in Key West, Florida. From Key West she moved to another base in Arkansas. When asked to tell stories about her time in the service, she said "It was war. There are no good stories".
Agnes is honored as a hero in a memorial for Women In Military Service For America at the Ceremonial Entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. Within the cemetery is Section 21, known as the nurses section. www.womensmemorial.org
Agnes is predeceased by her husband, William Thomas Miholich, and son, Randall Joseph Miholich.
Agnes & Bill had a life full of adventures. They were entrepreneurs in the fullest sense, starting their first business in South Bend with a grocery store which featured frozen foods, unheard of in the early 1950's. She worked in the store, kept the books, cared for her first three children, ages 4, 2 and 1, plus domestic duties. What an amazing woman!
Not a stay-at-home-mom, she worked as a nurse at various businesses in South Bend.
Their next business was a trucking line in Gary, Indiana, hauling interstate and intrastate steel . Again, Agnes was chief accountant. By now there were six children with another on the way.
August, 1964, Agnes & Bill moved their seven children from Indiana to Mesa, Arizona where the dry climate benefitted her health. This wild and exciting trip required contacting all the intervening states for permission to enter due to the extraordinary length of pulling a 55 foot mobile home with a 19 foot Cadillac limousine. Many people stopped to stare at the procession, especially when Arkansas required a police escort across a bridge.
In Pecos, Texas, the limousine had had enough. Transmission & air conditioning gave up. Eight of us were sheltered in a small motel room while Bill completed repairs.
Having parked the mobile home in Mesa, putting their oldest child in college, they went in search of jobs.
Soon they found a home in Tempe, Arizona. Agnes worked as a nurse at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital.
Next moves were to California: Needles, Cardiff, Leucadia, Solana Beach, finally landing in Carlsbad. She has lived in San Diego county since 1970.
All her children followed her to California. She is missed by her children: daughter Patricia Pollard and spouse Gary of Valley Center, daughter Kristin Sanborn and spouse Ted of Oceanside, son Bill Miholich and spouse Candi of La Costa, daughter Michele Miholich and spouse Lou Bulte of Carlsbad, son Thomas Miholich of Fairfield, daughter Maria Chambers and spouse Ron of Bonsall. Her many grandchildren: Susanne Smith, Nic Miholich, Jesse Miholich, Kyle Miholich, Cory Miholich, Adam Chambers, Casey Chambers, Conrad Miholich, Jordan Miholich. Great grandchildren: Madisyn Smith, Alexandra Smith, Colbe Broderson, Isabelle Miholich, Hailey Miholich, Karinna Miholich, Mariah Chambers
She dedicated her life to her children, family, church and many causes, physically and financially.
