Alice Mitchell, 104, passed away March 21, 2024 at Indianola, Iowa. She was born February 4, 1920 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1937. During her school years as a teenager, she sang in a trio with her two older sisters on WMT radio in Waterloo, Iowa. She also sang in an all-girl choir at First Baptist Church in Cedar Falls. Singing was her particular joy throughout her life.
Alice married Arthur H. Gray in 1940. To this union were born three children. In her early marriage, she lived in California, Ohio and Iowa. She raised and supported her children and their activities, helped her husband in his business, was very active in her church, church choir, and enjoyed square dancing and playing bridge.
In 1974, Alice moved to Carlsbad, California and worked for Victor L. Copeland, optometrist, for six years. She married Fred E. Mitchell in 1981 and was an active member of the Carlsbad Community Church. She was President of Ladies Ministries, a circle leader, and a member of Bible study groups. She also sang in the church choir for many years.
Alice was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and friend. She was an excellent cook, and enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home. She loved having her Midwest family visit her in California, and loved going back to the Midwest to meet her new great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed seeing Fall colors and Winter snow during seasonal visits. The highlights of her other travels were going to Europe, Hawaii, Colorado, and a cruise around the New England states.
She was very generous and would do anything to help and support her family and friends whenever possible. Alice will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Florence Jonkheer; two sisters and their spouses, Iris (Stanley) Spears, Camilla (Homer) Davis; one brother and his spouse, William (Elaine) Jonkheer; her first husband of 32 years, Arthur H. Gray; one sister-in-law, Beulah Gray; one brother-in-law and spouse, Wallace (Ione) Gray; four nieces (Gray); her second husband of 32 years, Fred Mitchell; one son-in-law, Loren Burkhalter.
She is survived by two daughters and one son, Cheryl (Robert) Evans of St. Joseph, Missouri, Lucinda Burkhalter of Chariton, Iowa, and Rex H. Gray of Ankeny, Iowa; two step-sons and one step-daughter, Dale (Dawn) Mitchell of Fallbrook, California; Ron (Jeanette) Mitchell of Vista, California; and Sharon (Vance) Manakas of Moorpark, California. Alice is also survived by six grandchildren, twelve step-grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, nineteen step-great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
