She was a remarkable lady whose infectious smile would warm the hearts of those who knew her. Born in Los Angeles, to her parents, Yvonne and Emil, she spent most of her youth in Newport Beach, California and Amarillo, Texas where she was doted on by her many aunts and uncles.
Family moved to Los Angeles with relatives and then to Balboa Peninsula home of her grandfather Emil Bergey who was a former French sea captain and who had settled in Newport in 1895. She attended elementary school on Balboa Peninsula and her best friend was Betty Lou Racker. Betty’s father opened Baldy’s Tackle shop at the base of Newport pier in 1922 and the girls had the run of the peninsula.
She attended St, Mary’s Academy in Amarillo and St, Mary’s of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. She excelled in sports. In High School, although diminutive, she was captain of the girls’ basketball team. Later in life, she loved to play golf, volleyball, and tennis. She even took flying lessons in an open-cockpit plane. She had an adventurous spirit.
She converted to Catholicism when attending St. Mary’s Academy in Amarillo and remained a devout Catholic for the remainder of her life. Her only cousin, Marion, introduced her to her future husband, Wayne, and they were married in St, Joseph’s Catholic Church in Santa Ana, California.
She remained active as a volunteer for the Catholic schools her children attended and supported the parishes where she lived.
She was a mother, a grandmother, and a great grandmother. She was devoted to family. As her aunts and uncles began to age, she took care of all of them. Some were moved to nursing homes and she visited them EVERY day! She was always caring for someone else.
She outlived most all of her close friends: Frank and Kay McClintock, Bob and Carolyn Marvin, George and Gloria Gearn, Marge and Joe DeClue, Ken and Kay Kellner, Betty Lou Racker, Mary Lynn Herman and the list goes on, including her beloved husband who predeceased her by twenty-two years.
She is survived by her son Mark, her daughters, Carol and Linda, her granddaughters, Danielle and Shannon, and her great granddaughters, Madden, Makenzie, and Emma.
Her funeral service will be held on September 7th at Fairhaven Cemetery in Santa Ana followed by a graveside interment.
