Don proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for more than 20 years. He served in Vietnam, a chapter of his life he often shared through stories with family and friends, offering insight, humor, and reflection. Stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California, Don dedicated himself fully to his military career and retired with the rank of Master Sergeant—a title he carried with lifelong pride.
After retirement, Don’s heart belonged to his Yellow Rose Ranch in Mariposa, California. He loved the early mornings most—rising before the day began, pouring a cup of black coffee, with his dogs by his side, and watching deer roam with the mountains in the distance. Those peaceful moments brought him true contentment and reflected the simple life he cherished.
Don was always tuned in—to his land, his town, and the world around him. He took pride in knowing what was happening in Mariposa and could often be found listening to his CB radio scanner, staying connected in his own way. He loved ranch life and working with his hands, whether building something from scratch or working on cars. Ever dependable, Don was always ready to lend a hand and help others whenever he could.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jill, his parents Leland and Thelma, his son Donnie, and his sister Christine, all of whom he now rejoins.
Donald’s legacy lives on through those who loved him most: his daughter Mary Munn Torres (Fernando); his son William Munn (Tricia); his step-son Sherman Clayton (Dorothy); his seven grandchildren; and his five great-grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his niece Kimberly Hepburn (Wayne)and nephew Michael O’Grady (Katie).
Donald will be remembered as a man who loved deeply, worked hard, served proudly, and found happiness in life’s simplest pleasures—a quiet morning, a familiar voice on the phone, and the land beneath his boots. His life was well lived, and his presence will be deeply missed.
A committal service with military honors will follow at Miramar National Cemetery, located at 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122, on February 6, 2026, from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm.
