I first met George about 5 or so years ago when I joined the "Thursday Night Poker Group" here in Oceana, where he lived. When George stopped driving, and then stopped using his "Golf Cart" a couple of years ago, I started giving him a ride each Thursday night. I would call him every afternoon to remind him that it was "Poker Night" and he would almost always say, "You made my day!" Then, as his memory was fading in some respects, I would call him again about 6PM or so to remind him that I could be at his home at 6:20PM to pick him up. While George's mind wasn't as sharp as it used to be, it was razor sharp at our Oceana card table. :)  Frankly, I think it helped keep it so.

In the middle of our card game, we would take about a 10 minute break and George liked to go outside and smoke a cigarette. He would always tell me that "he didn't inhale," although he didn't remember that he asked me that every Thursday night. During that time we would talk about everything from something current to his time in the Navy (if I remember the proper branch of his service.) We both enjoyed that 10 minute break. I was also reminded that his memory was getting a bit cloudy, as he would always ask me the same question almost every week, i.e. "Do you inhale?"

When I would take him back home, he would almost always say, "Remember to smile... you look handsome that way." 

I will miss George. I did what I could for him, in my small way, and he repaid me with his cheerfulness and friendship.
