

Helen grew up in St. Louis and married Jennings Bryan Fowlkes ("Dink"), the brother of her high school best friend, Louise, in 1948, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a World War II veteran, who was assigned to the Naval Air Station located there. His naval service would take Helen and their daughters Laura and later, Janet, to assignments in other states, the Philippines and finally San Diego, where Helen lived for more than 70 years.
Helen and "Dink" were both very active in the Elk's Club throughout their married life. He was chosen as Elk of the Year by his lodge and Helen was elected President of the Emblem Club, a national Elk's women's' organization by Chula Vista Lodge 415 in 1983.
Helen is survived by her two daughters, Laura Caufield and Janet Andrew; her four grandchildren, Jim Andrew, Andrea Fry, Cecil Caufield III and Michael Andrew; and her five great-grandchildren, James Andrew, Cecil Caufield IV, Seneca Caufield, Knox Fry and Simone Caufield. She is also survived by her nieces Judy Nalley, Pamela Dzierwa and Debby McBride and her nephew, Steven Bonenberger.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Senior Chief Petty Officer Jennings B. Fowlkes, United States Navy; her father Walter, and her mother Helen; her sisters Betty Rogers and Mary Bonenberger and her second husband, Richard Weldy.
A visitation for Helen will be held Monday, March 16, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside, California. ,92054, She will be laid to rest to join her husband, on March 17, 2026.
A shelter service is scheduled at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, 1700 Cabrillo Memorial Drive, San Diego, California, on March 17, 2026, starting at 1:30 PM. Helen Marie Weldy will be interred the same day.
