

Jacqueline Marie Pierrette Bareille McDermott, a fiercely independent and private person, died peacefully on July 13, 2024, in Lake San Marcos, California. She was born to Rene and Hortense Bareille on January 27, 1926, in the village of Soueich, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in France. She enjoyed returning to Soueich to visit her aunts and uncles each summer, but she grew up in Casablanca, Morocco, where her French parents owned several businesses.
Due to her language skills, in French, English and Arabic, “Jackie” served in several positions in the United States Embassy in Casablanca and the American Consulate in Paris, where she met the love of her life, Robert Joseph McDermott, “Bob, ” an American Merchant Marine officer from Pennsylvania.
Jackie and Bob were married on August 23, 1948, in the Casablanca Cathedral. After a career in the United States Merchant Marine, Bob died on Father’s Day. 1976. Thereafter, Jackie moved from Clifton, New Jersey to Oceanside, California where she resided for the rest of her life.
Jackie and Bob’s first child, Marie Jo was stillborn. Jackie is survived by three children, Patrick McDermott (Elaine), Marlene Carter (Jim), and Michael McDermott, as well as four grandchildren, Lauren Hopkins (Jason), Erin White (Bryan), Brianne Wehrle (Shawn), Rob Carter (Alexandria), and six great-grandchildren, Abigail, “Coco,” Georgia, Gwyneth, Jack and Nora.
The family wishes to express its thanks to the staff of the Meridian at Lake San Marcos and the nurses of the Hospice of the North Coast for their compassionate care.
