It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Joan Thurman, age 76, on December 7, 2022, at home, in the loving care of Tim, her husband of 53 years, and her daughter, Lisa. Joan is preceded in death by her father, Arthur Stuart, and son-in-law, Paul Tyler. She is survived by her mother, Lois Stuart, sisters Mary Davis (Steve), Cathy Buchholz (Jeff), Connie Stuart (Joe), grandson Noah Tyler, and many nieces and nephews. Born in Indianapolis in 1946, Joan was the first daughter to Lois and Art Stuart. The family moved to San Bernardino when Joan was 5. She attended St. Bernardine’s High School, where she was on the school yearbook staff and involved in many county science projects. She went on to attend UC San Diego, where she met her husband Tim. They married in 1969 and eventually settled in Fremont, CA, where Joan started her banking career with Security National Bank in Oakland. They moved to Vista in 1978, where Joan worked for Southwest Bank and Torrey Pines Bank, becoming knowledgeable of all banking operations.
Joan accomplished big things in a quiet way. She took classes and passed the CPA exam. She worked for an accounting firm and went on to own the firm with her partner and wonderful friend, Jeff Golden. Joan loved her work, even with the long hours required during tax season, and loved helping her clients. Joan’s calm manner and steady perseverance was a blessing to her family and coworkers.
Joan loved to write stories and poems, and to garden. She spent many hours with Tim maintaining their orchard of citrus and avocado trees, and enjoying the morning and evening views from their backyard. As a literature major in college, Joan was an avid and varied reader, enjoying the likes of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Hugo and Dickens, as well as biographies and technical publications. She was an art enthusiast, and enjoyed touring art galleries.
Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
