I have so many good old memories about uncle Kaname.  When I was about 10 years old (52 years ago), he sent to me Walt Disney's books about Donald Duck, Snow White, etc.  I was not able to understand English at that time, but I was very excited and really enjoyed seeing beautiful pictures on the book.  Because of this experience, I studied English very hard.  Uncle Kaname was always very nice to my grandma, Kiyoe, and all of my family respect him and are proud of him for that.  He will be missed by us all.  May he rest in peace.

My good old memory about Uncle Kaname
When I was little (nearly 65 years ago), I always enjoyed boxes full of goodies sent to us by Uncle Kaname.  Whenever we opened a box, it had a very special and unique smell.  The box contained maple syrup, canned condensed milk, chocolate, mint candies, children's clothes and shoes and all of these goodies had a special nice smell.  I thought that it was the smell of America.  Even now, I clearly remember the design of labeling and a carnation mark on the can and even the color of the clothes which uncle Kaname sent to me.  I remember that I was so excited to receive a pair of white leather shoes one day and walked around everywhere wearing them.  It was immediately after World War II and Japan was in disorder.  In those days, Uncle Kaname and his family thought of us in the United States which was far away from Japan.  I sincerely thank him and his family for kindness.  May he rest in peace.

My memories about uncle Kaname

Uncle Kaname called and said, "Hi, Koichi!!  Pop rock candies are very popular and selling well in the U.S.  I will send them to you!!"  He sent to me 60 dozens of pop rock candies by airmail.  I remember that they were sold out in only three days in my parents' store.  I sold "pop rocks - candies that burst in the mouth" for the first time in Japan.  It was the spring of 1975.  I look back on this episode with nostalgia.  Since that time, I visited Los Angeles for several times and whenever I met him in the U.S., he told me about trends in American business.  When my views were different or incorrect, he made me reconsider saying calmly, "I have a different view.  What do you think, Koichi?"  I would like to thank Uncle Kaname for his kindness and kind advice.  May he rest in peace.

I met uncle Kaname when I visited California with my mother, late Mary Hiramatsu, when I was an elementary school child.  I was surprised to see very colorful icecream in the U.S. at that time.  I think that uncle Kaname went through hardships living in the United States since prewar times, but he is always cheerful and positive.  He always gave us a positive and forward-looking impression.  May he rest in peace.

People come into our lives for various reasons and when they leave us we cherish the knowledge we gained through knowing them. Rest in peace to an amazing man who lived a 95yr journey of struggle, success, happiness and finally peace. From this man I was fortunate to learn kindness, patience, discipline, wisdom and tolerance at a very young age. This world was blessed to have known such a man and his new place of rest will I'm sure be honored to accept him.

It was with profound sorrow that I learned of Kaname's passing.  I will certainly miss him a lot.  I wish I could attend Kaname's funeral, but it is difficult for me to visit the United States as I am 98 years and 5 months old.  Instead, my son Akira and my daughter Tomoko will attend the funeral on behalf of me.  Kaname will be greatly missed by us all.  May him rest in peace.

Dear Eiko
The news of your father's passing filled us with great sorrow.  I heard that he worked very hard as a gardener when he was young.  I also heard about his difficult experience in Denver during World War II.  I met him for the first time in Japan when I was an elementary school kid.  He arrived at Haneda Airport by propeller plane (not a jet plane in those days) and I remember that I went to the airport to meet him with late aunt Mary.  I think that he came to Japan to see my grandpa, Fukutaro, as he was in bed after having cerebral infarction.  For a little kid, uncle Kaname looked really cool and he was a nice guy.  I was surprised to see a red-colored plastic washbasin which he brought from the U.S.  Because, in those days, washbasins were made of aluminum in Japan.  I was also surprised when he purchased a bunch of bananas at a fruit shop.  Because bananas were very expensive in those days and my parents used to tell me that I would not be able to eat bananas unless they were straightened.  Uncle Kaname may laugh when he hears this, I suppose.  When I visited the U.S. for the first time, your parents were both well.  Uncle Kaname said to me that I should have stayed in the U.S. longer so that he could have taken me to other places such as Yosemite.  During my second visit to him, he showed me around by his car.  However, he said that I should have visited him when he was a lot younger.  He was strict about discipline and even scolded me when he came to Japan.  I had a chance to talk to him by Skype in June this year.  At that time, I thought that he really looked like grandpa Fukutaro.  I suppose that it had been very tough and difficult for you to take care of your father.  You have been a wonderful daughter.  It may be hard for you to look after your mother, but I know that you are such a wonderful daughter.  Take care.

I pray for uncle Kaname and wish him to rest in peace.

When I returned to Nachi to see my mother, Mie Nakamura, during the Obon holiday (mid-August), I heard that you were not well.  I, however, did not think that I would hear such a sad news so soon.

As uncle Kaname lived in the U.S., I didn't have many opportunities to meet you.  But I still remember that you visited us when I was an elementary school kid and we travelled to Onsen (hot spring) in Totsukawa.  I still rememver it clearly as if it happened only recently.  During our trip to Totsukawa, you taught me fishing.  I also remember that you passionately talked about bass fishing in the U.S.  I remember that you really loved fishing.  May your soul rest in peace.

Dear Kaname Ojisan (uncle Kaname)

You often called me from the U.S. saying, "Hi Chigusa, this is your uncle."  I still remember the tone of your voice.  We talked a lot over the telephone for many times.  When my parents passed away, you called me and expressed your sympathy saying that I was the only one who lost parents.  I very much appreciated your warm words at that time.  When I visited California with my family, you showed us around and looked after us.  It was an unforgettable trip for the whole family.  I will remember that trip for ever.  I sincerely thank you for your kindness and warm welcome to us.  You must have had experiences which I cannot even imagine.  I sincerely wish that you rest in peace.

Have you met my grandma, Midori, in Heaven?  I really want to thank you for your hospitality when I visited California with my mother and brother.  We really enjoyed meetin with you and had a good time with you in California.

I have met you only three times, but I always got excited when you sent to us a parcel from the United States.  When I was little, I got very excited to receive sweets, cocoa, chocolate and cherries.  I always looked forward to receiving goodies from you.  I wanted to visit you in California someday, but it is regrettable that I was not able to do so.  I sincerely wish you rest in peace.

You have given us all kinds of good memories.  When I was little, you came to Japan and gave me a toy car.  It was made in the United States and I still remember how excited I was when I got it because it was very cool.  When I visited the United States with my mother and sister, you showed us around in California.  At that time, I cannot forget how kind you were because you were too generous to make our trip a wonderful one.  We all enjoyed the visit to California because of your hospitality.  I will never forget your kindness and thank you very much for everything.  Please rest in peace in Heaven.
