Born Marjorie Ozella Davis on September 5, 1927, she led a full and happy life for the majority of her 90 years on this earth. The youngest of seven brothers and sisters, she was born at home in the small town of Battiest, Oklahoma to Alpha Omega and Nora Davis. The family never had much in the way of material goods but they more than made up for that in the love that they shared. She was particularly close to her sister Mary Jo; the two of them were the first in the family to get a college education. After graduating as Valedictorian of her high school class, Marjorie joined Mary Jo at Southeastern University in Durant, Oklahoma, where she earned a degree in Business Education. In 1953, she and a friend adopted a new motto - “There’s a man for me in ’53!” Sure enough, she met a young Army Lieutenant at a USO dance in Lawton named David Austin. They were married 3 months later, and remained hap-pily married until his death. Oh, and she promptly replaced “Ozella” with “Davis” as her middle name!
The couple moved around a lot after Dave completed his tour of duty in the Army, welcoming their first son, Stephen, in 1955 in Omaha, NE. They made their home in La Puente, CA for about four years, where they had two more children, Julie and John, followed by a move to Longmont, CO and back to Thousand Oaks, CA in 1965 where they spent many years. Marge went back to teaching after John started kindergarten, and she taught every grade from 4th through high school for the next 15 years. In 1997, they moved to Fallbrook, CA where they remained until 2015 when they moved in with their daughter in Carlsbad, CA.
Marge was a devoted servant of the Lord, and an active member of the church - both Baptist and Meth-odist. She loved to sing the old hymns her entire life. She had many friends, a quick wit, and an active social life, playing bridge and taking a variety of classes. She earned her Master’s Degree at age 50. She also had many hobbies, including crocheting, needlepoint, garage sales, collecting Depression Glass and other collectibles. She had a tremendous love of genealogy, and spent years collecting and documenting information on her ancestors. She loved her husband, children and grandchildren with all her heart. She continued to enjoy hymns, flowers and babies to her dying day, in spite of the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Marge leaves three children and a lovely daughter-in-law Cindy; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by Dave in April 2016.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s San Diego or the Alzheimer’s Association.
