Dr. Martin Jeffrey Shoman, known to everyone as “Marty,” of San Diego, California, passed away on April 30, 2025 at the age of 86. He was born on November 16, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York to Robert and Hannah Shoman. Marty grew up in Brooklyn and then Queens, and graduated from Hofstra University on Long Island and then the Pennsylvania School of Optometry (which led him to be a lifelong diehard Nittany Lions football fan). After marrying his wife, Roberta, he was an officer and optometrist in the Air Force, stationed in San Bernardino, California for a few years before moving back to New York where he had an optometric practice with his father and brother, Stephen. Marty later worked as an executive for Pearle Vision, which eventually led him back to California with Roberta and their two sons, Greg and Evan, this time to San Diego where he had always wanted to live. Marty was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who always wanted the best for his family. Marty is survived by his wife and sons and their families, including his grandsons Alexander, Nicholas and Jordan. The family would like to share its gratitude to the caregivers at A Better Solution in Home Care and La Marea Senior Living whose care and compassion were incredibly meaningful to Marty. Family and close friends are invited to attend a short service at Eternal Hills in Oceanside on Wednesday, May 21 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Marty’s honor to a charity of your choice.
A graveside service for Martin will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Mortuary and Crematory, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA 92054.
