

On March 9th, 2017, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grand mother, Nancy Chen, at the age of 86, passed away peacefully at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California.
Nancy Chen was born in 1930 in Nanjing, China. Due to the civil war in China, she left for Taiwan at the age of 19. There Nancy met her husband, Sam Chen and they were married on May 4th, 1952. Sam and Nancy, along with their children, left Taiwan in 1966, to begin a long career in the diplomatic corp. Their work took them to Malawi, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, South Korea and Australia. Nancy was an invaluable partner to her husband in his work as a diplomat. After their retirement and having lived in Melbourne, Australia for 24 years, they moved to the United States in 2002, to be closer to their three children and grandchildren. Nancy is a devout Catholic and found joy in volunteering for her church and serving others in need. She also excelled in preparing countless traditional Chinese dishes, gardening, singing Chinese opera and free-lance writing on family life for community newspapers.
Nancy is survived by Sam, her loving husband of 64 years, three children, Carine Chen-McLaughlin from Baltimore, Maryland, son Samuel Chen of Carlsbad, CA and son Edwin Chen of San Diego, CA. Son-In-Law James McLaughlin, daughters-in-law, Eulalia Chen and Sophie Chen, 7 grand-children Melinda, Sam, Jennifer, Jessica, Jillian, Rachel and Mia, grandsons-in-law, Matthew Armeni and Daniel Fein and 3 great-grand children, Matilda, Olive and Emma.
