The Golden Haired Lady...
Laughing with the Golden Haired Lady, I sat beside her looking at old pictures of me, not the memories where I was dressed in my favorite dress for church or dolled-up for a dance recital, but the ones where I played in the mud or had put band aids all over my face. One of my favorite things to do was to sit with her and reminisce on my childhood and how perfect the world appeared, immersed in daisies and butterflies. I sat with her every moment I could and played her favorite card game, Old Maid. I cherished the delicious grilled cheese sandwiches she made for my brothers and me. I loved her sense of humor and with every laugh how she rolled her head back. She was a cook by day and an artist by night creating masterpieces. She made the most scrumptious of entrees, meatloaf my personal favorite. She made every meal with a family recipe and embedded each dish with a special ingredient, her love. I can recall the wonderful strolls we used to take to the nearby duck pond with flocks of birds, ducks and fish. She and I decided that our favorite creatures were the ducks because of how they waddled and made us laugh. The Golden Haired lady was the grandmother all other women wanted to be. She was the most loving and kind woman, and then she disappeared. But even without her presence, I realized something magical, something so enigmatic; I recognized the way her cheeks creased around her mouth as she smiled, the very thing I had seen with my mother. I realized that after all, she never stopped being herself, her mind was consuming her soul, and she had no control. Then, I imagined the pain, the worry, and the confusion she was possibly encountering. Had anyone truly wondered what it would feel like for the person affected with the disease, not the people who are affected because of it? I certainly did, and my Golden Haired Lady, my grandmother, became the strongest woman I'd ever know, because she was fighting a disease she'd never win.  

To the woman I will forever look up to…

It is difficult to close my eyes and imagine a world without you in it. Without your presence to grace the Earth I begin to understand not only what I have lost, but what I will no longer have again and no new memories to create. I will forever miss the laughs that we shared and the unforgettable moments between us.   

You blessed me with your strong presence and provided a bright light in my life. You enriched me with your love and care, but also with your selflessness. With the many family events and annual traditions, the most significant memories were the ones that were unplanned and spontaneous, and embraced creativity beyond limits.These special moments were the ones in which you helped shape the woman I am today.  

I will forever cherish the surprises and sweet desserts you left me when I would return home from school; a constant reminder of how much you loved me. I will miss having girl’s days and fun adventures with the carefree conversations about life and reminded me to try my best and never give up. Your laugh and your dazzling blue eyes, though, are what I will miss most.

I’m forever indebted to you, you provided me with the best gift of all time-you gave me my best friend, my mother. You created a strong woman who I look up to everyday, a template in which I hope to follow. You gave me nothing but love and nourishment. You were constantly there to help me up when I stumbled and constantly encouraged me to dream and follow my passions. You were there every step of the way.   

Although you won’t be here to kiss my cheek or hold my hand, you will always be in my heart. I know you will be with me though in the next milestones of my life, looking down from above. We will later be reunited, but for now watch over the family. I love you, miss you and nothing will ever change that. The world has lost a beautiful, bright soul. I love you golden haired lady. Dear Nana,
I can’t express how much you meant to me. You held a big spot in my heart and will continue to do so. Thank you for raising me and being the greatest grandma. You’ve left so many memories from playing Old Maid to playing mini golf at Bullwinkle’s. You were always so cheerful and positive about life. You’ve led the way of life in which I’ll follow. I will always remember you for how you stayed true to yourself. You were an amazing person with the biggest heart. I admire your passion through life. Your big smile brought happiness to all of the family, the smile that I will not forget, ever.  This is not a goodbye but a ‘see you in the future’. We will one day meet again but for now rest easy and look after us. I love you so much Nana and will never forget how much you’ve impacted my life. God bless.

Dear Nana,
It didn’t take a lot for Nana to be happy. She always had a smile on her face and always made me laugh. We always had a laugh when my Red Sox beat her Yankees or vice versa. She taught me to always live life to the fullest no matter what is thrown at me. She is the special someone who will stay with me forever. I know that I will try to live my life as she did with a smile on her face and God in her heart. I know that she is in a better place and looking forward to seeing us all one day.

Nana,
The way you sacrificially loved our family has had such an impact on my life.  It was always such a joy to be with you because you were so caring.  I'll never forget all of the Christmas Eve's with you and the picnics at Shelter Island.  I love you so much, you will forever hold a special place in my heart.
